It's our first day on Lantus (switched from Vetsulin) and Putu's BG is dropping about 100/hour.
  • AMPS 640
  • +3 346
If she continues on this trajectory, she'll be hypo at +6. Is it expected to continue dropping at this rate or will she level out?

What should I be doing to keep her safe?

Thank you,
V

That is a massive drop for day one but don’t panic it’s most unlikely she’ll continue on at that rate and she’s probably going to have a collosal bounce after this too. I’d check her again at +5 to see where she’s at and if you haven’t done so already read the sticky at the top of this forum abou handling low numbers. It’s a good idea to print that one out so you have it handy whenever you need it.

Also, keep updating your thread title with your numbers so people can see very quickly if you need help. And I would add today’s date at the start so people know the thread is current - this forum gets pretty busy.

And if she hasn’t eaten recently you could give her a couple of teaspoons on low carb wet to try and level her off a bit.

Thanks, I just fed her more LC wet food at +3 but she's already been grazing on that all morning as well (probably had about a third of a 5.5 ounce can by now).

I've read all the hypo stickies, but I was wondering if we ever recommend switching to HC food as a preventative measure - like if she's dropped another 100 at +4?

Usually the HC waits until a kitty drops into the danger zone. However as you get to know Putu’s responses and if it turns out she’s a bouncy girl it might be used to steer a cycle and head off a bounce but it’s too late this time and she’s still quite up there so I wouldn’t bother with it now.

ETA although yes, if per chance she dropped to 100 at +4 a tsp of HC wouldn’t hurt.

Lol, yup you called that bounce a mile away!

So did I put her on too high of a dose? I know about "earning" a reduction, and she hasn't done that. Is there some kind of guideline for bouncy cats? I'm not sure if I should be backing off her dose or holding steady.

You’re going to hold this dose for a week to see what it can do, unless she drops under 90 and earns a reduction. It’s very early days and you’re going to have to clear your mind of everything you learned about vetsulin because lantus works totally differently. Have you had a read of the what is the insulin depot sticky at the top of the forum?

It is common for cats to start off bouncy but this is only cycle 1 for Putu so we really have no idea what her responses are going to be yet.

Yes, I read the insulin depot sticky. I don't know if I fully internalized it yet, so thank you for helping.

And I’ll just add for completeness, we wouldn’t usually reduce a dose because of bouncing, that’s something we’d try to manage with food. Dose decisions with lantus are all about how low the dose is taking the cat.

ETA - no one picks everything up straight away, it’s very much a case of on the job learning :)
