Hmmm, something seems wrong.

Squeaky has suddenly (last few days) switched from eating raw pork to baby food. He vomited at 3 am on Saturday night (Sunday morning). There was a small hairball.

This morning he vomited another small hairball. Usually a vomit consists of two parts: the main vomit and a followup small vomit. However, he continued to have two more small vomits and now he has wanted to go outside to eat grass so he could vomit again.

Sometimes I can sidetrack him, give him food so he won't want to go outside and eat grass. He didn't want it (it was babyfood). So I let him go outside. Seems like he still has something to vomit up.....

Any ideas what could be going on?

Should I give him 4 mg or 8 mg of cerenia?

Thanks in advance.

PS it is also very unusual that he is shedding anyway. This is the first year that he has been shedding. I used to be amazed that he never shed.

Actually I have 60 mg pills, but I can cut them down to very small. One of my vets was really into cerenia, she let me cut the big ones down to 8 mgs.
To help me save money.

Usually my vet does 6mg cerenia for most cats. I've seen one on 8mg, but he likely had pancreatic cancer. I'd aim for 4-6mg dose, once a day.

B12 shot and fluid therapy may also be helpful, if you've done those before.

Do you mean an extra B12? I already gave him one a few days ago.

Vet visited last week, said he is not dehydrated. He drinks and pees quite a bit, with his diabetes. He drank when he came in from outside and now he is drinking again.......

Sorry I missed that you'd given him a b12 already.

I'd just do the cerenia until his appetite is back to normal. Sometimes fluid therapy can help them feel better, even if they're not dehydrated. But be careful with the timing; if you give fluids too close to insulin injection time, it can affect the insulin absorption. Best to space them out two hours apart.

Yikes. I actually have a bag of fluids, but I'm alone. It would be challenging....... or impossible.

I wouldn't worry about it then. Don't need to stress him (or you!).

The cerenia should help. :)

Thank you for help. We got the pills down, he is balking at eating. His BG just tested over 600 so he is in the midst of a big bounce. Any further thoughts? I will try to get him to eat, I guess I can shoot whether or not he has eaten correct? With his number so high....

Okay he is eating, I will prep his shot.

Great, he ate pretty well, good enough.

I cannot thank you enough. After 13 years of struggling with cat health issues, to have some one helping in real time is such a treat! I don't have to sit and pace and ponder and try to figure out what to do. This is amazing. Thank you so much.

Are you testing for ketones?

Oh, and interesting. I note that the last three times he had vomiting spells, including this morning, his numbers were very high, 500 to over 600. So this is some kind of pattern.

Hmmm, my diagnosing vet told me that vomiting lowers blood glucose. This must be some kind of innate reaction to out of control blood glucose numbers. However we need to do something huh?

If he's vomiting due to pancreatitis, pancreatitis is very painful. Pain will increase bg. If the cerenia doesn't help enough, he may need pain medication like buprenorphine or gabapentin.

Well he does have pancreatitis. But the vomiting is happening when his BG goes over say, 550. I have some buprenorphine in the refrig. @Wendy&Neko

WENDY, MOVING THIS DISCUSSION TO 11/16/20 THREAD IN LANTUS.

EDIT: I probably need to run this by my vet. However she has said she doesn't think this board has scientific evidence of the protocol that is promoted and used, she doesn't agree with some of the text I've copied for her to read. And she's a holistic vet ugh. Her other comment was, well but they are there at 2 am for you, and I'm not. She may or may not be helpful...... vets......

It is possible that the shedding may be due to Squeaky benefitting from the insulin treatment. As you know, when a kitty becomes diabetic it can't use the nutrients it eats effectively. In order to protect itself, the body tends to focus the energy available on life-sustaining functions to the detriment of processes like regrowth of the hair coat. With insulin treatment the body becomes better able to use ingested nutrients so it is then able to steer resources to additional bodily functions. Sometimes kitties then start to replace the hair coat and this can cause marked shedding.

This happened with Saoirse. At one stage, phenomenal quantities of hair would drop if you as much as looked sideways at her. I became worried she might go bald! Instead, she regrew a beautiful, oh-so-soft new coat. (((Saoirse)))
