Vomiting and Constipated

Hi !

My cat is in remission since a while now. He started to be better with raw diet. I fed him with Big Country Raw Lamb/Turkey/Salmon. He is probably allergic to beef and now I do have some doubts about any kind of chicken/turkey/duck.

He's been vomiting for a while now. Most of the time it's a white substance or very liquid. I brought him to his vet, but he just told me to remove the turkey from his diet. Now with a pure Lamb diet, it's not a big success. He still vomits regulary and he's constipated.

I honestly don't know what to do anymore. I feel like raw diet may not be the best decision for him. I can't say he's vomiting since the raw diet, but I have to admit it always been difficult. I'm wondering if a diet with Fancy Feast can help him since he seems to digest more this type of food (and been a super fan of). However, I'm super concerned about the money issue. My cat is about 11 pounds. From what I've read, I would need to give 3 cans per day. Do you have any idea of the portion ? I did some research, but found several different opinion. Any similar experience with raw diet ?

Thank you for your help, this forum have always be a reference for me.

My kitties have been on a raw diet for years. They have also always been prone to constipation, getting worse as they have gotten older. And they tend to vomit when constipated also, it seems to make them nauseated.

A raw diet will give them smaller stools also because they "use" most of the food and there is less waste. To quote Dr. Lisa on raw diets-"There is very little non-digestible matter contained in this diet. Therefore, the volume of feces will often be much less when compared to cats on high fiber or poorly digestible diets. You can read Dr. Lisa Pearson explanation of this here - https://catinfo.org/making-cat-food/#Constipation

I use miralax mixed with their food and that seems to be the trick. Been using it a few years. I use 1/8 tsp 2x a day. It's tasteless and they have no problem eating their food when added.
BTW, does the raw food you use have bones? Bones tend to be very constipating. I use eggshell powder instead of bones in the raw diet.

THANK YOU Katie's mom

Ditto. My cat Oliver is 8 pounds and I used only 1/8 tsp once a day to keep him "going". I stopped the Miralax after 4 or 5 days and he was fine but several days later got diarrhea (unrelated I think) and started vomiting and ended up in the hospital for two days. I then used Fortiflora to stop the diarrhea. All this reminds me of the Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly!

My cat, Phoenix, is 16 years old. For the last several years he has had problems with constipation. It was recommended to me to give him raw pancreas. DO NOT BUY THE PANCREAS CAPSULES OR POWDER. The raw meat pancreas that I have found to be the best is from My Pet Carnivore in Indiana. They will ship it frozen anywhere. The raw pancreas helps them digest their food. It actually breaks the food down. Ever since I started Phoenix on this, he has a bowel movement every day and it is normal looking.
I get a small amount of the pancreas and feed it to Phoenix by hand. Then, I give him a treat after he swallows it. I have heard the raw pancreas can taste bitter so I follow it with a small piece of meat.

wow thats fascinating! Thank you

puking foam is usually acid reflux. My cat sometimes gets constipated. I buy pumpkin baby food (because otherwise i waste a lot of a big can) and put some in her food. A little miralax helps too. If the puking is stomach acid, a 1/4 tablet of regular strength Pepcid could help. Let us know what the vet says.

Why didn't I think of that. Pumpkin baby food I'll have to buy that, I was wasting BIG can of pumpkin. I was freezing it but she doesn't like it as good!

The baby food is prefect. I put press and seal wrap on it and write the day I open it on it. After 5 days I toss it and open a new one. Yeah pumpkin gets a weird texture when frozen. This is working out better.

Hi ! Thanks all for your response.
My cat stopped finally vomiting after taking only fancy feast and psyllium. His poop was too soft so I need to balance this. I am not sure if I want to continue on fancy feast or try again raw diet. I need to balance de fiber in the raw diet, but i'm not sure he like the taste of raw anymore + the fancy feast is really expensive ! I will call my vet tonight if possible <3 (I'm really busy)

I'm will let you know, but I think the constipation is the cause of his vomiting !

You can add psyllium to the raw food too. I make Katie's food using Dr. Lisa's recipe. I add 3/4 tsp. of psyllium per 1 lb. of food, but you can increase/decrease to whatever works for you.
I believe you said he went into remission after starting raw, so IMO, if you can stay with raw it may be best...if his diabetes is controlled by diet, you may not want to "rock the boat" by switching foods. But that is just my opinion, and what I would do. You have to do what you feel is right for him. Good luck!

Some raw foods have quite a bit of bone in them, depending on the protein. That can cause constipation. A raw made with egg shell calcium instead can help.

If the vomiting starts up again, I'd talk to the vet. An ultrasound might be in order to check the GI system.

Update !
The food (big country raw) mix is 10% bones. I think it's a little bit high.

I started to give only Fancy Feast and the result are awesome. He did not vomit at all and his poop are really soft (too much).
My vet say it must be the raw food. He knows nothing about this diet and I think it bias a little bit his opinion. He said I should go for this can : https://www.hillspet.ca/en-ca/cat-food/sd-feline-kitten-savory-salmon-entree-canned

I have two options :
1. Find the proper can and it can cost a lot $$$$$
2. Try raw food again

My vet want me to add restorolax (laxative). He's said that I should go for kibble, which i'm strongly against.

The product your vet is recommending is what we'd call medium carb food, 12-13% carbs. Under 10% carbs is low carb and what is best for diabetics. And he's suggesting kibble which is even worse. I wouldn't listen to the vet for food advice. Most vets don't get a lot of nutrition training in school.

A quick Google search finds a few brands of raw with egg shell available in Montreal (Mrs. Meady's as one example).

Another website you might find interesting: https://felineconstipation.org/ Restoralax (called Miralax in the US) is an option listed there.

It's sad because I really like my vet.. but he seems lost with raw food.
Youre right. Maybe I should check for an other raw brand with less bone. I will check the one you linked.
