Ive seen some articles in here explaining low carb diets that I will definitely read, but just in general, is 36 grams of carbs in wet food too high for a diabetic cat?
I did the math on Stevens food and it's 36 grams (I can't remember what percent that is) for a 2.9 oz can (87 calories a can) and he eats 1.5 of those a day. (He weighs 6.5 lbs)
Its hills science diet adult sensitive skin and stomach. He has some liver issues as well so I chose this as its easy to digest.
I had him eating a prescription wet food from hill's at first, glucose control, which is like 4 g of carbs. Thats obviously lower but the problem is he doesnt like it very much so sometimes doesn't want to eat it, and then we bigger problems if that's all I have around, haha.

  • It would be helpful if you can set up your signature
  • On the left, under Settings, Click on Signature. This is where you will put information that helps us give you feedback.
    • There is a limit of two lines which may include two links; you may separate pieces with commas, dashes, | etc. This is where you paste the link for your spreadsheet, once it is set up.
    • Add any other text, such as
    • Caregiver & kitty's name (optional)
    • DX: Date
    • Name of Insulin
    • Name of your meter
    • Diet: "LC wet" or "dry food" or "combo"
    • Dosing: TR or SLGS or Custom (if applicable)
    • DKA or other recent health issue (if applicable)
    • Acro, IAA, or Cushings (if applicable)
    • Spreadsheet link. Please put the signature link on the bottom line of your signature information, on its own, so it is easy to find.
    • Please do not put any information about your location in the signature for security reasons. If you wish to add your country location, please add it to your profile.
Be sure to click the 'Save Changes' button at the bottom. If you need help urgently it is important we know these things at a glance. We don’t want to waste valuable time finding out information.

tap on your avatar where it says your name ,then hit profile page ,tap on that ,then go up to the very top, upper right hand side and tap on your name ,it will bring down a drop box, tap on signature, the signature will be under settings, tap on the signature then and you can start to add what I posted above, make sure you hit save ,
Welcome to the best place you could ever be and an awesome group of people

Look up with food in the food chart both Diane and I posted. Is it not there?
Unfortunately his exact food is not on there but I was able to find it on the hill's website.
Hill's® Science Diet® Sensitive Stomach & Skin Chicken & Vegetable Entrée Cat Food (attached the screen shot.) So now just trying to find out whether that's considered high.
I'll make my signature and spreadsheet before posting again things have been super hectic so I haven't been able to yet.

Food chart,
There is nothing special about the glucose prescription food either

Most of us feed Fancy Feast Classic Pates, depending on the flavor they are either
2 or 3 percent carbs

Friskies pate also

Can you please fill out your signature , I posted the directions above, so we don't have to jeep asking you what you are feeding , or what insulin he's on.
Is he still on Novolin?
Are you home testing?

Sorry, I was just looking for an answer to what percentage of carbs is high, in general, for food. I wasnt expecting it to be specific to my cat yet as I have not had the time to set up the spread sheet and signature. Just checking this intermittently and responding as I work, etc.
But the glucose control food I'm referring to is also Hills and according to their site is 15% compared to the 34% of the other one. I find this odd as it is still a high percentage. Again this is just general info from the website. I'll get back with specifics after I fill out all my info.

You want less than 10%. If you look up FF, you’ll see most is under 5

Okay I got my signature and spreadsheet (started.) I don't have as much data as I should because I need some tips on testing but plan to make a separate thread regarding that.
As far at the dosing info goes, I couldn't find what TR means in the glossary, so I wasn't sure if I needed to put TR or SLGS? I just put the units in there for now.

So as far as the food thing goes, I noticed a few things about Hill's Science diet. Both on their official site and with the food chart, I noticed all their options have a pretty high carb percentage. It is measured in dry matter content, does this change anything since I'm feeding wet food?
I'm looking into some lower carb brands I can switch him to based on that food chart (very helpful.) :cat:

TR is one of the 2 dosing protocols you can use with Lantus. It doesn’t apply to Novolin so you’re automatically going with Start Slow Go Slow. Read the yellow sticky notes on the Novolin forum for more info on the protocols

Nevermind, I found the post explaining this
