Sorry for the unpleasant topic...! Howie has been having very soft stool/diarrhea for the past couple of weeks and so he has been on 2 bouts of S Boulardii on the emergency dosage (1/4 capsule 8 times/day) followed up by a week of the therapeutic dosing (1/2 capsule twice/day). Yesterday was his last day of the therapeutic dosing (had normal formed stool even this morning) and now he is back to soft stool/diarrhea this afternoon. For anyone who has used S Boulardii, does this sound familiar? How many rounds of the emergency dosing can I do? I really don't want to take him in if I don't have to. He is eating just fine and seems normal. Today he's been a little sleepy but it is so dark and dreary that I can't blame him!! THANKS!!

Have you tested for ketones in the urine? I would definitely do this today to see there are no issues with ketones if he is at all lethargic
Tagging @Sienne and Gabby (GA) about the S boulardii
I tested this afternoon on his meter and he was at 2.5. So from the readings I’ve done, ketones for cats don’t register until 2.4-2.5. I did give him 50 mL fluids this afternoon.

Let’s see what Marje says, but I tend to think since it’s a probiotic and you can give as much as you need to.
I agree. I would go back to emergency dosing until the poo firms. Then I would go to therapeutic dosing and then maintenance dosing. My older kitty gets a maintenance dose of S. boulardi with MOS twice a day. He’s been getting this for years and I have no intention of changing that. It’s great for the intestines.

It won’t hurt to leave the maintenance dose going indefinitely as it is a probiotic.

Any recommendations of how long I should do the therapeutic dose before going to maintenance? And the maintenance dose is 1/2 capsule/day, right? Thanks!!

I have had success using Endosorb (it is a clay, no Rx needed) for Merlin's drug-induced diarrhea. It is similar to the original Kaopectate from many years ago. The tablet is large (ca 1.5 cm) but easily breaks apart or can be squashed with a spoon. It is fairly tasteless. Has a slight sweet taste. Can be mixed in food or put in gel cap. I gave 1/2 tablet with meals. If it works, you might see some improvement after 1-2 weeks.

I’d give it a few days past when his stools are normal. If stools start to look soft, go back to the therapeutic dose.

For what I use, the maintenance dose is a smidgen scoop twice a day. I use the dash-pinch-smidgen spoons from Amazon.

Minnie was given the solution and it was a nightmare. In addition to being purple and staining everything it fell on, she’d foam at the mouth and I could never get it all in urghhhh never again
