Glucose monitoring (Snugs) cont'd

Thank you everyone for your responses. Snugs is feeling great! We are giving canned Fancy feast selected pate' varieties for 2 1/2 days without any dry food. His glucose was 158 this morning. ( It was averaging in the 300's). This is amazing! He is on 2 units of PZI am and pm a total of 4 units a day. I don't want to lower the insulin dosage until he gets to normal blood glucose levels for a few consecutive readings.
I am waiting to hear from the veterinarians. He needs to be seen and that is the other obstacle. My neighbor, friend, is reluctant to pay for a full blood workup, which is somewhat understandable considering the price. ($250+) Plus 100-$200 for urinalysis etc. about $500.
I checked out the glucose strips and they are $50 for 100 strips. The major problem with that is catching his urine. It is a closed litter pan, and again, I will need to do that. (Also, there are
2 cats).
My new strategy is to get him to the vet, compare my meter with his meter reading, obtain a fresh urine sample by palpating or asparating his bladder: Bypass the full blood workup for now.
I also need to know when and how to adjust his insulin dosage, and I definetely need urine samples for that. (I believe they are more accurate than the blood samples for immediate true glucose concentrations).
At home: I will take off the litter pan cover and try to obtain urine samples. That will require me to stay over. (Or, I can bring him to my apartment for an overnight stay. He would be less stressed than in the hospital). As far as the dry kibbles? Well, the goal is to try to get him to drop some pounds and get him into remission if possible.
I don't belive that will happen if fed any dry, because again, the owner's habit of keeping the
bowl full. But, I thank everyone for your suggestions on the brands, when/if I reintroduce dry food.
The most critical thing now is to adjust the insulin dosage correctly. I would appreciate feedback on how everyone increases or decreases the amount for their kids.

so glad he's doing well!!! food makes a big difference. THat is a low preshot so be really careful shooting insulin. If it's under 200 preshot consider stalling for up to an hour to see if it's going up. I'm worried 2 units might be too much with this food change.
