Yesterday's Update

Hi everyone!

Mo is becoming more and more cuddly! He is still a bit slow but that's to be expected. Still eating well. But this morning when I got home from work he was cuddling me in bed like he used to. I think he got a bit hot so he went back under the bed (his favourite place to sleep in the last couple of months) but it was certainly nice while it lasted. He also started making biscuits on me (kneading me) for a good couple of minutes which is more like what he usually does. He doesn't seem as warm either so I'm really hoping he temperature has come down even more. As mentioned yesterday, he was 39.4 degrees celsius and I'm told normal range is 38-38.5. His temperature isn't so warm now so all really good signs.

He's just resting up today. He wanted to go outside last night (he's an indoor/outdoor cat), but of course he will remain on house rest until he is back to normal. If he wants to go out a bit later, I think I will do a supervised wander around the house for 5 minutes or so, but best he stays inside for now.

Hope everyone is doing well! Enjoy your weekend :bighug:

I can't believe I forgot to give Mo his shot at 8pm :banghead: it was an hour late. I really hope that doesn't affect him badly.

We went for a wander outside and he really enjoyed that. Keeps wanting to go back outside but I won't let him out unsupervised until he is better. Which will hopefully be soon.

His numbers have been in the 400s all day. Really not happy seeing those but I checked the ingredients of the biscuits he has to eat and the first ingredient is rice so........o_O

Remind me again why he has to eat biscuits and which ones they are?

ETA: if he's eating biscuits, you can't follow TR.

Yeah I know :(

His biscuits are in my signature. He's had pancreatitis and the vet wants him on food that's low in fat and gentle on his tummy. I've asked in another thread if it's ok to take him off them and just eat FF completely again. I don't really feel as though he is benefiting from being on them tbh.

I'm on my phone, I'll come back and link the thread I'm talking about.

Vyktor had triaditis (pancreas plus liver plus small intestine) along with DKA soon after diagnosis and he still ate the same LC canned wet food including fancy feast afterwards without ever having a recurrence. Elise @tiffmaxee is well versed in pancreatitis.

Glad to hear he’s perking up and you’re getting some loving :)

Thank you for this! It gives me hope that he can still remain on his fancy feast and that I can cut out the biscuits. I'm thinking about also adding ZiwiPeak canned food in there. When I google the best wet food for pancreatitis it comes up with this. So maybe I'll get a couple of cans tomorrow and see how he likes it. It's also low carb too!

I've been given this advice from a Cats with Pancreatitis facebook group.

"Taking him off the prescription food will NOT make his pancreatitis flare up, it's extremely unlikely that his usual food was the cause of pancreatitis, I can't believe your vet gave you high carb dry food knowing he's diabetic? This is just making good pancreas work even harder to try and regulate his insulin due to the high carb content, take him off it asap and feed only wet, the pate is fine, you need anti nausea and pain meds from your vet to treat the symptoms of pancreatitis, not prescription food."

I think I agree with that. Thoughts?

Ziwipeak was one I used for Vyktor too, it is an excellent food but very different to the fancy feast so I’d introduce it slowly. Also it is much denser (literally and nutritionally) so you don’t need to feed as much of it.

I’d say the Facebook poster is right - the specialty food would be just a vet go to the same as for diabetes. I think vets generally are pretty poor with nutrition. Take it back for a refund and say Mo wouldn’t eat it.

So happy to read another great update!:bighug: Yay Mo! You're doing an awesome job taking care of him, Katy.
FWIW, I had asked the IM specialist that cared for Butters and she said that there was no need to make changes to her food. She eats some LC (low carb) canned and a bit of raw.

YAY I'm glad Vyktor had success with Ziwipeak. I will keep in mind the density and figure out how much to give him. We will introduce it slowly for sure.

In terms of the biscuits, the vet just gave them to us so thankfully don't need to be refunded. Will just throw them away.

Awww thanks Lyla :bighug:

I'm so happy everyone agrees to take him off the biscuits. I have done so this morning and his numbers came right down! I was sleeping and my partner didn't take a AMPS test but we assume he would have been high as he ate biscuits last night. But at +4 he is back to 18.8/338 so I was right in saying it was the biscuits making his blood glucose high. Will keep testing him throughout the day.

I will start another update thread with more info :)
