Hi Folks, good morning. I'm wondering if the way I feed Squeaky could have any bearing on his numbers?

I take away his food 2 hours before the PSBG test. However sometimes I encourage him to eat a bit at that time, so if he hasn't eaten for a while, he doesn't get over hungry during those 2 hours.

Am I sabotaging the low numbers? Maybe I should fast him for 3 hours?

Basically he gets food whenever he wants, except for those 2 hours.

Thanks for any insight. Hugs from Jan and Purrs from Squeaky

I think you are on to something. I tried to feed Max all his food by +5 or +6. If you feed later as the duration of the insulin is nearing the end the bg will rise. Feeding late is only a good idea if the numbers are trending so low that you might not be able to shoot on time for the next cycle.

Okay he has had tremendous GI issues in the past. On the budesonide, his diarrhea is gone. However he still does seem to seek grass when his stomach is empty. Something about having an empty stomach that is hard for him.

So I don't think it's a good idea to only feed him twice a day. Maybe four times a day? Post-shot and at nadirs? With a small amount of treats.

Squeaky eats a whole lot. Sometimes I see him eat a lot, then not long after, go over to his water bowl and guzzle water. I do think he tries to use water to help regulate his BG.

I am going to keep the ?? up for others to weigh in. Thanks a bunch.

I’m not at all suggesting you feed twice a day. If he needs to eat later in the cycle give him just a teaspoon of food and try stopping at +9. Just a little food should help prevent the empty stomach vomit. Max had chronic pancreatitis so he needed many small meals. I fed him at preshot, +2 +4 and +5 or 6 each cycle. You could try +9 too but just a little lc.

That sounds like sage advice and I will follow it. I think we will see fast improvement if I do this. So four meals a day and a snack, does that sound good Elise? Okay and treats if we go outside. Hey you always need something to eat when you go on an adventure. :)

I free feed Furball because feeding X number of meals per day didn't work for her. You'll have to experiment to find what works for Squeaky. Take good notes. Do you have any freeze dried treats? They are low carb and can be fed late in the cycle to help with stomach issues and not raise BG.

I have to chime in and agree. I've discovered the same thing with my Olive. So I've actually backed off from feeding her last meal at +10 as I always have and made it +9 now. That seemed to make a difference in her numbers. She didn't go quite as high by shot time as she was feeding her +10. She's always had a sensitive tummy so I was afraid to go too long without her eating because I didn't want to risk her vomitting. But she's done quite well pushing it back an hour, only I need to do what you said Elise and only feed a tsp at +9. I didn't realize that would be enough for her tummy to carry her for the 3 hours until feeding time. Also, many small meals per cycle is the way to go. ;)

Hi Folks, Yay we got a lower number finally. I fasted him for 3 hours instead of 2 before his shot. And I'm going to regulate how much food I give him.

Anyway we're at 104 at +3. He ate a nice snack by himself after his shot. I take it I just need to re-test at +4 and see if he is going up or down?

Thanks in advance.

If you can, you could test in an hour without feeding to see if he stays up. If you can't - which is fine - you can feed him and go to sleep.

Hmmm, still not an expert. Too late, I already fed him. It probably would have been better to not feed and keep him low. Ah, so we learn. Thanks for the coaching and instruction!!!!

The pan-seared pork seems to help make up for all the ear pokes.....

So next test is AMPS right?

Thanks a bunch.
