? 11/4 Zhoom Boy is not eating, help with dose

Zhoom barely ate last night and nibbled just a teeny bit today. I did not give him a shot this morning. The vet came over and gave him fluids and a cerenia injection. If he doesn't come around tomorrow she will come back out and do blood work.

Zhoom always eats. Always. So it is highly unusual for him to walk away from food.

I am not sure what to do about his shot tonight if he does not eat again. The at-home vet told me not to give any insulin tonight. My clinic vet told me to give half a dose if his blood sugar is over 300. I have never had to deal with giving insulin to a kitty that won't eat. Any advice appreciated.

I can't give you any advice, but I'm sure someone will be around to help you. Hang in there :bighug: these kitties will sure give ya scare now and then!

Charity, I'm really new to all of this so can't advise you about dosing but I feel your concern! Have you tested Zhoom Boy for ketones? I found out my sweet Ruby had diabetes because she stopped eating and drinking and it turns out she had DKA. Either get the ketostix or the blood work done as soon as possible. If you can catch it early he'll be fine.

Thanks Katherine. I have been testing Zhoom for ketones with urine strips. So far so good.

I hope Zhoom feels better soon. Even cats who cannot eat due to pending surgery, will get 1/2 their normal dose so that should be safe. Not all insulin goes to combat carbs from food. Can you assist feed? Have you tried these tricks from our Health Links forum:

Thanks Wendy. I will read those over. He is nibbling at his dinner right now, so at least he is eating a little bit.

As long as I figured I could get around 2/3 of Neko's food in her, between her eating a bit and me syringe feeding the rest, I was good to shoot full dose, even with lower numbers than you've got. You've also got a depleted depot. Worse case, I brought out a little higher carb LC.

I wish he would eat that much. he is really only taking a few bites :(

There were times I had to rely on syringe feeding the rest. Getting a little food in her tummy would often "prime the pump", make her feel better and she's start eating on her own.

It's definitely stressful when a kitty who always eats, stops. :bighug:

I had to syringe feed as well. Also try finger feeding. I always kept baby food around too. Gerbers 2nds all meat I could sometimes gets Max to eat even when he didn’t want his food.
