I'm back..........it's been a while since I've been on......computer issues and just plain too exhausted to read.
Pumpkin definitely is a high dose kitty...........he is on 10 1/2 units twice a day. He is still in the 300-400 range. Vet is working with me closely. He is stumped and has never seen a cat need this much. (Pumpkin is teaching him a few things!!) Pumpkin is living a good life. I little neuropathy, comes and goes. He is still a happy and sweet boy.
I need to hear from those that have or have had "guzzlers". Has anyone had a cat that required such high doses of insulin? I haven't had a specific test for Acromalgy ?? (spelling) but he has absolutely no other symptoms of this condition.
Can a cat just be a guzzler without any other issues?

Any chance of updating Pumpkin's spreadsheet? Even just the last two weeks of data will be helpful for us. It's missing since mid August.

Neko got as high as 8.75 units, when I got her treated for acromegaly and the dose came down. We've had plenty of people need more than 10 units of insulin if their cat has acromegaly or IAA (insulin auto antibodies) or both like my girl did. By the way, I saw a study that says only 35% of cats with acromegaly have symptoms at diagnosis. There are more subtle signs, always hungry, gaining weight in spite of not being regulated, a bit of a pot belly. Neko's only symptom was her hunger and her dose.

Generally - no, as long as the cat is on low carb food. Over six units the cat typically has one of those conditions. Testing is the way to go. There are treatments for acromegaly, but you have to know what you are dealing with first.

Thank you so much. I think he needs to be tested. He is always hungry, gaining weight now and a little pot belly. Is there a test for Acromegaly? Is it affordable? (teacher salary) Is there an affordable test for IAA?

Thank you thank you

Michigan State University is the only US lab that does testing for acromegaly. It is the test for Insulin Like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) test 20005, MSU charges $60
The test for Insulin AutoAntibodies (IAA) can also be done by MSU, test 20031, MSU charges $20
You can go here and enter the tst number or test description to fine more about the tests
https://vdl.msu.edu/Bin/Catalog/Catalog.exe

In addition to what MSU charges, you will have to pay for the vet to do a blood draw and ship the blood to MSU. Make sure you get both tests done at the same time, to save money.

Thanks for updating the spreadsheet. Over 10 units total dose and still seeing high numbers, go ahead and increase by 1 unit. With insulin resistance, you also don’t want to hold a dose too long.
