I've been trying to get more +2 and +11 spot checks recently as I don't have many of those to use as comparisons in data. I wanted to sleep for an extra hour this morning so asked Steve (hubby) to get a +2. He actually did his very first BG test the day before and he was nervous and Olive wasn't cooperating. So I wanted him to try his hand at it again this morning to get him more comfortable doing it. I was proud of him! When I checked her at +3 her BG had risen to 427 from the 399 when he checked her an hour before. Since I've not seen her jump from a +2, I was most curious as to why. Is this a normal phenomena? Or, knowing that if you rub the injection area will cause the Lantus' duration to end prematurely...is it possible that he grabbed her in that area and it affected the insulin? She's not used to him testing her so she keeps trying to get away and won't sit still for him. He said he grabbed her chest though to stop her from moving away and doesn't recall touching the injection area. I'm just shooting in the dark here. I have no clue why she'd go up from a lower +2. Any thoughts? Since she's still so high I'm not going to retest until +6 and hope her numbers are way down.

In the US, meters have to be within 20% range. We call this meter variance. 399 and 427 are within meter variance of each other. The two numbers are actually within 10% of each other, so not significantly different. It's also possible DH testing was a bit stressful to Olive as it's something new to her. I don't think the injection site had anything to do with it.

Thanks for the feedback. Hubby will be happy to hear it had nothing to do with him. ;) Once Steve's more comfortable testing and Olive settles down for him, he wants to try injections. Well, "wants" to is a bit of a stretch...lol...:smuggrin:but like the other day I was running late to get home and get Olive her shot. Hubby said he'd give it a try and do his best. Bless his heart. I told him I'd rather wait and have him shadow me for a while before he tries it solo. Had I been more than 20 minutes late I might have contemplated it, but...

Great news, today is Olive's weight check and she's starting to gain. Yes!:joyful: She's at 9.98 lbs. At diagnoses we learned she had dropped to 9.9 lbs. and had continued to drop even further to 9.4 during the weeks that followed when we couldn't get much in her. She had risen to 9.7 on September 26th and as of today is 9.98 lbs. She's on her way back to better numbers. When you think about it, she was 18 pounds when we adopted her and that meant she lost half her body weight! Before onset she had stuck around 14 pounds for years. So we are pleased with the weight gain.

Yay for hubby testing! Mine will test too - it's so nice to have an extra person help! My hubby also hasn't given insulin yet but has watched me do it. I have a control issue with letting him actually give it lol. And yay for Olive gaining weight - it's such a great sign! Have a wonderful day!

I have a control issue with letting him actually give it lol.
:) You may have sensed that very same control issue in my words above. lol. He's hesitant to deal with shooting although he volunteered, and I'm nervous to let him. lol. As long as I'm doing it I KNOW it's getting done correctly. Oh my gosh, that sounded plain horrible. It's not what I meant...but I guess it equals the same thing doesn't it. I just NEED to know he's up for the challenge before I burden him with it.;) Sounds soooo much better now. :p You have a great rest of your day too!

As long as he's comfortable with using calipers to measure the dose, the shooting part is easy...it's the measuring that's tricky.

Show him how to measure using your calipers - that you've set to the correct dose - with a syringe with water in it...show him how to do it...it's a 'no miss' then :) so glad he's willing to help!!
