9/30 Diago amps 130, pmps 118

Tested his pmps he's at 111, will test again in 30 minutes but here we go again. Love the number but nervous about shooting.

What dosing method are you using? You aren’t getting enough mid cycle tests so no way to know what his nadir was or if still on the way down.

We decided to use SLGS method. I haven't been able to get any mid-cycle tests the last two days due to jury duty. However, I'd think the days prior to that have plenty to determine.

I see that jury duty is taking you away during the day - could you get a 1+ before you leave the house?

Also, can you get more tests tonight? These are lower numbers than you're used to seeing, it's important to see how low this dose is taking him before making any decisions about dosing.

No, I can't obtain a +1 before leaving as I shoot and then leave to go to jury duty. Today was the final day as a verdict was made. I should be able to grab a +2 and potentially a +3 tonight.

the days prior to that have plenty to determine.

I'm afraid the days prior don't really count for much at this point...there was a bounce cycle that looks like it went on for a couple of days - although with only high AM and PM readings I'm only guessing...and now these lower AM/PM pre-shots have me thinking he cleared the bounce and surfed lower today...

No, I can't obtain a +1 before leaving
Ok, well I'm glad jury duty is wrapping up...just for future reference, next time you get called to jury duty you may want to back up your test/feed/shot schedule an hour or so, to allow for you to get a 1+ before leaving home...it's commonly done by folks who leave for work every day. It's just a matter of doing a bit of planning so you can fit in a test before leaving and that will help you determine what kind of food to leave out.

This makes sense. I agree I think he did clear the bounce from missing the pm shot on 9/27.

Thankfully it will be another 2 years but I will take this into consideration for other items that force me to not get a +1 before leaving.

Given the above information, how do I handle tomorrow's dose since he won't be able to eat tomorrow as he'll need to have surgery to clean and close the wound?

Poor baby. Different vet feel differently about this. When Max went under anesthesia for a dental I was told he could not eat after midnight but some water was okay. Wendy I know has given a half dose. Is it too late to call your vet?

Yikes, that's a bummer... literally :p. I had a long haired Calico who had a ruptured anal gland many years ago. Not pleasant, you may want a vetty visit, if it is abcessed, it may need to be cleaned/flushed out fully, and possibly need antibiotics.

Yeah they closed an hour ago. :( I did go ahead and give him his 2u and will keep an eye on him. I'll probably pull the food late so he can undergo anesthesia. I feel so bad but I'd probably put money this is what caused him to relapse. Maybe I'm wrong and time will tell but an infection brewing like this could be the culprit.

Hmmm, sorry we cross posted. My girl didn't need any surgery/closure, so no anesthetic. She was a feisty girl, and the vet was able to clean out the wound without putting her under. Just my experience FWIW.

Oh yes he'll be going first thing tomorrow. This happened to him like 8 years ago and it was crazy because the left side went and then 6 months later the right side blew. It was definitely abscessed as it ruptured.

Okay, well your vet knows best. I took mine to emergency, and they didn't put her under. And it was super messy/abcessed. Personally, I don't know about closing a wound like that. To me, I would think the right approach would be to clean it out, and let it heal up, but perhaps it depends on the vet. I don't recall stitches but maybe she did have some, sorry, memory isn't so good with all the health issues of my kitties over the years, I lose track of details.

ETA: it goes without saying she DID have a local anesthetic

Yeah, now I'm trying to recall if the actually closed his wound all those years ago. I think they did because it was so large but the other time they may not have because it was smaller and we had to use a cream on it daily. I also noticed yesterday or the day before he seemed warm and now I'm kicking myself that I didn't realize that he likely had a fever.

@tiffmaxee when your Max went under anesthesia did you give half dose? Given when my vet opens it will be 30 min past his normal shot time and he won't be able to eat obviously, then what about when he comes home tomorrow after anesthesia? Still half dose if he doesn't want to eat? Sorry this is very new to me as I haven't had to give insulin when they aren't eating.

Ooh, I’m sorry this is happening to your baby! This just happened to my kitty about a month ago, same presentation. She was super growly for a couple days, had a much lower appetite, I even tried to bribe her with Dr. Elsey’s (just to get some food in her), and she was NOT having it, yet her numbers were awful! She went from blues and yellows to pinks. I was certain her insulin had gone bad and even drove to my vet’s to buy new insulin. 7 hours after buying a whole new vial, at 11PM, she put her booty in my face and low-and-behold, there was a lemon-sized abscess (I wish I was exaggerating) just below her left anal gland. It hadn’t ruptured yet, but was seeping pus out of her rectum. I called the ER vet to ask if I should bring her in or wait until the AM and go to her normal vet, but they recommended bring her in. They ended up sedating her, draining and irrigating it, and leaving it open to drain. It drained for a couple days and healed, but no stitches or packing, just some oral clavamox and gabapentin for pain. Her numbers went back to normal (well, her normal anyway;)) in about 3 cycles. Hope your baby feels better!! :cat::bighug:

Yeah, this honestly shocked me. It has been so long since we've had these issues, however this is the first time that's he's also been 100% on wet food, since 9/23. I couldn't believe it when I saw all of that going on lol. I'm glad he'll be at the vet today to get all fixed up. I may have them give him a good brushing while he's sedated. He hates it when I try to brush him lol. We still get it in but they can do a much more thorough job while he's in sleepy land. I'm also hoping they have a flexible e-collar versus the plastic cone so it doesn't get super messy when he's eating or going through his cat door. Hoping they give me baytril for the antibiotic, he has a terrible allergy to clavamox.

@Megan and Bernie so they sedated him and left the wound open. It is huge! How long did it take your kitty to heal up from this? The last time he had this they closed the hole and after 14 days we removed the sutures. With this I'm shocked how big it is.

Right!? I had a dog who used to get impacted anal glands (granted, they never abscessed), but they were like maybe pea-sized at best. Bernie's was massive! She's super finicky about being touched anywhere past her ribs, so trying to lift her tail to check it out after she initially flashed me her booty took about 15 minutes. When I first saw it, I touched it real quick but didn't initially see the pus, so for those 15 minutes trying to get her to let me look, all I knew was that she had an enormous, hard lump on her rectum, I thought she had some massive internal tumor until she finally let me look at it and I realized it was oozing pus. I've never been so relieved to see pus in my life haha! In her defense, I prooobably wouldn't let some lady following me around, crying, repeating "Lemme see your butt!" anywhere near me either LMAO

The first night/morning (she came home around 1AM), it was super messy and oozy. When I went to bed, she had her e-collar on. When I woke up, she did not  I have no idea how she got that bad boy off, especially since she was high as a kite (I'm talking *stared-at-the-wall-for-twenty-minutes* high) - such a crafty girl. She got super stressed when I tried to put it back on her, so I told her she could keep it off if she left her butt alone. She must've understood our deal, because she more or less left it alone. I think I saw her licking it maybe once or twice a day, which I think actually helped, she kept it very clean.

It oozed much less the second day, and by the third day, it looked wet, but wasn't still seeping fluid. The swelling went down in about 2-3 days (she stopped needing the gabapentin around the same time). I think total it took about 5-6 days to completely close. She had a follow-up with her normal vet 8 days after it was drained, and by then it was totally healed.

So glad your kitty is back home! I hope he feels better soon :cat::cat::cat:

First thank you so much for making me laugh out loud about this situation. I loved hearing your personal experience. I asked our vet for a soft e-collar since I wanted to make sure he could still maneuver around to eat his food, go through our cat door, etc. He's trying so far. I can't believe how quickly the anesthesia wore off, he is bright eyed and ready to take on the world but that wound WOW! I had to call the vet back and say "are you sure this is going to heal?" They said yeah most of the time they heal really good after 7 days which completely amazes me. I'm glad we have antibiotics to help it heal, wow.

I also had to ask if we should be cleaning it. They didn't tell me anything about that. I'd imagine if he's sitting on the floor he could get tiny dirt particles or in my case because I have four animals, hair, what I need to do to ensure it heals properly. She's supposed to call me back to discuss it further. Talk about a poor guy, we go from two meds to four. And two of the four are given twice daily. I'm going to give him extra love given this has happened and now I'll be poking him, rubbing meds on his ear, and giving meds orally....whew exhausting.

By the way your girl sounds like my older girl kitty. She doesn't handle anesthesia good at all. She is super high after she comes home almost until the next day. What is hilarious about her is she chases my husband around after she's had anesthesia and just lays on him for hours. She never does that sober HA!!

Hah you're so welcome! :D I was amazed how fast it wore off too. After she broke through her wall-trance, she got the munchies and ate an entire cycle's worth of food at her +8; even then, her AMPS went down. I'm happy he's already ready to play!

I wondered the same thing about cleaning it and her sitting on the floor with dirt and fur! It's one of the reasons I wasn't too concerned with her licking (as long as she didn't do it in excess). I figured her mouth was cleaner than the floor ;)

With her meds, she did not like the liquid gabapentin, but the pill clavamox was somehow no problem! I'd never pilled a cat before, so the first few times it was so hard - her mouth is so little and she kept spitting it out. Then one morning, she spit it out and it landed *somehow* in her food bowl, and then she sniffed it and ate it! I thought it was a fluke, but the next time she was due for the meds, I literally put the pill in her bowl, put a small dab of food on it, and she ate it all right up :cat:

I bet Diago will be thankful for all the extra snuggles and lovins! :)

Hah how funny, Bernie is OBSESSED with my husband!! When he's at work, she hangs out with me like maybe 20% of the time. The second he comes home, she runs to the door meowing and purring to greet him and follows him everywhere! It's adorable. On a couple of occasions, we've been laying on the couch watching TV, and she'll come up, stare at me, and ever-so-gently put her paw on my hand and then start to push out her claws until I remove my hand from him, and then she drapes her paw across him where my hand was! She's such a trip! At least she's super easy to find when he's home haha!

Oh my goodness she sounds so darn precious! I'm not sure why but I never got an alert that you added a comment @Megan and Bernie. So, we're three days in and I'm just so amazed at this hole in his rear end. I try to look at it at least a few times a day to see how it looks. Last night and now today I've had to trim hair around the quarter size hole since the hair was laid over the top of his wound. I wish they would have shaved a bigger spot. Surely this isn't helping it heal, having hair in it. Really hoping the next few days it starts to scab over. He's now struggling in the litter box with peeing which doesn't surprise me given he has a hole near his bottom. :(

No worries! And aw, poor baby!! How’s he doing with the cone and meds? Is his BGL coming down at all?
Bernie’s didn’t get a scab until maybe the 5th day or so? It was just open and wet for the first few days. And wow, I’m surprised they didn’t shave more too - they shaved like ALL the fur around Bernie’s bum and the back of her legs, but come to think of it, they didn’t shave much around the actual incision :rolleyes:. I totally forgot until you mentioned it, I think I ended up going in with scissors and trimming the fur as close to the incision as I could get it. She’s long-haired, and when they shaved her, it looked like she had assless chaps on, it was ridiculous haha!! It ended up being such a blessing though, cause she gets diarrhea every once in a while and it’s *impossible* to clean, it just smears deeper into her fur, I always just ended up cutting it out
I’ve considered just keeping it that short (it’s like 3/4 of the way grown back). I wonder if she’ll let me give her a fancy (or shall I say *fanny*) haircut... :woot:

Thankfully I can keep his cone off while he's upstairs with us, he does pretty well. I made sure to ask for a flexible one and he does ok but definitely prefers to not have it on. We opted for Baytril for this issue since he takes it like a champ. I dissolve it in water and syringe into his mouth, he does so good.

I wish they would have shaved more, I just checked and he has a tiny bit more hair in his wound today. UGH

His BG numbers have actually been pretty darn good. I'm doing a trial of no insulin since this booty explosion lol. The last insulin shot he had was Friday morning. He's been maintaining numbers right at 150 since the last dose. I do think we'll start back likely on Tuesday with a tiny dose of .5u or even .25u since even at 0.5u his preshot got down to 68. That preshot helped me decide to do a trial of no insulin to see how he does.

I'm also tempted to try a tiny bit of dr. elsey's clean protein dry, he has been hardly eating since all of this, like maybe 1 can to 1.5 can of 3oz fancy feast chicken pate. I know the cone doesn't help and neither does the antibiotics but darn I wish he would eat.

@Megan and Bernie you aren't going to believe this! This guy ripped off the scab that had formed over the wound. Could not believe it when I seen it this morning. It looks good, red, but he some how got around the soft e-collar and ripped it off. UGH!! I'll be putting on the hard e-collar today. He's definitely feeling better more fiesty lol. He literally just got all in the old ladies face who promptly informed him, back off lol! My old lady girl is so sweet but she's like Yoda in a cats body. HA!

Well scratch what I said above. It actually got stuck to the blanket likely when he was sleeping and looks like it ripped off. This poor guy, jeez!

@Megan and Bernie, this cat....this scab is literally almost healed and what does he do today?! He ripped it off. It's a little bigger than a pencil eraser but gosh darnit I thought we were done with the e-collar. I guess not! :banghead: I was so hoping this would be all over by now. I think I've only got four more days of antibiotics.

Sorry to anyone else reading, I know this is an old thread but I didn't want to start a brand new thread since I wanted to update Megan. :)

Oh noooo! OMG he was so close! Poor little guy was probably trying to get some booty scratches in haha!!
His numbers look amazing!!! Congrats on the green today! :D:D:D

I know it!!! I couldn't believe when I saw it. I so hope it heals before we run out of antibiotics. He even gave me a green PMPS tonight at 99. I went ahead and shot his 0.15u but fingers crossed we're headed back to OTJ.
