HI guys,

I had an emergency this morning with Layla bug, Blue's sister. She has been on
meds for constipation and this morning was impacted. She's spending the day
at the vet. Poor baby wasn't moving.

Blue is okay. 402 AMPS but I guess that's expected after yesterday. I'll test him
again in a bit. I just need to calm down a little.

Braves start playoffs and I have about 20 minutes before game time. Go Braves!

Blue is good.

Picked up Layla bug and she's better.

Braves won

My sister contacted me. Her name is Sally Tanner. Her cat Lily was diagnosed with diabetes today.
I am sending links so I hope you'll look out for her. We haven't spoken yet. Only text so I don't know all the details but 8 lb. cat and put on 2 units every 12 hours. Sounds like a thing!
WILL DO!

That’s too big a dose unless irs 1 unit every 12 hours. Please ask her.

I know it is. That's what Blue was prescribed to take and I text her how much Blue was on now. She is going to call me when she can. I've already sent links and hopefully you guys can help her get started. I'll do what I can but don't feel like I have the expertise needed. I'm just a newbie too!

Hi Patty,

My but you've had quite the day. Glad Layla's better now. Poor baby... (((Layla)))

Not sure whether I've posted this for you before, but it's a very helpful site:

felineconstipation.org

Sorry to hear about Lily's Dx, and I agree with Elise that 2IU BID as a starting dose for an 8lb cat is too high. Will keep a look out for Sally and Lily when I'm on the board.

Congrats on your team's win, and I hope things have become a bit less fraught as the day has progressed.

HI Mogs,
It's been an eventful day again today but at least it wasn't Blue again. Layla is home and hiding away somewhere.
I did have that link at one time but thanks for reminding me. I need to learn more about it. Ha ha in my spare time.

I just spoke with my sister Sally and she's going to set up an account here. Lily was put on Vetsulin and I couldn't help
her since Blue is on Lantus. She's ahead of the game because her father in law has diabetes and she tests him twice a day.
Her vet did not suggest testing Lily. She doesn't know what to do tonight either. Her vet wants her to give 2 units and I didn't know what to tell her to do. Anyway, hoping she'll get on soon. She's very shy and said she "doesn't talk to people online", but
I'm hoping she'll adjust. You are probably gone for the day but I'm sure Elise will help and Jeanne will welcome her with open arms.

If your sister is familiar with testing then she should be able to understand your spreadsheet. Send her the link to it if you have not done so already.

I sent it to her my SS first thing. She registered but is reading. I told her to post in this forum. If she needs to go to another area just let her know. She was a little overwhelmed when I spoke to her earlier.

What do you think about the 2 unit starting dose?
I've never used vetsulin. This insulin is also called caninusulin. It was designed for dogs who have a completely different insulin metabolism than cats.

From the vetsulin stickie:

Starting Dose

  • Usually it’s best to start with a low dose of not more than one unit (1.0u), twice a day. The manufacturer recommends a starting dose of 0.25u to 0.5u per kg body weight.
    • If your cat is on a low carbohydrate (less than 10% carb), canned or raw food diet (there are a few select dry foods that are low carb) and blood glucose is less than 380 mg/dL (or < 20 mmol/L) the starting dose should be 0.5u.
    • If your cat is on a diet that is over 10% carb and blood glucose is over 380 mg/dL (or > 20 mmol/L), you can start at 1.0u.
    • If you are transitioning your cat to a low carb diet, your starting dose should be 0.5u.
  • For those new to dealing with feline diabetes we recommend that you post and ask for help if the BG is below 200 mg/dL (11 mmol/L) on a human glucose meter. Please post both here and on the Health forum especially is you see this forum isn’t busy. (For more information on what these numbers mean see ‘Home Blood Glucose Testing’ information below.)

An 8 pound cat is 3.6 kg
0.25u x 3.6kg = 0.9 units
0.5u x 3.6kg = 1.8 units Caveat – vetsulin hits hard and fast and can make a cat feel like ____.

The 2 unit dose is too high and possibly dangerous.

Can you get your sister to ask for lantus? Valuable time will be wasted otherwise it seems.

She already has the vetsulin. She's feeding her cats now and I talked her out of giving 2 units but she is planning on giving 1 unit. She follows the rules...

Lantus is what her father in law takes...
