Hi Mac has been on his Prozinc for 16 days now. Looking at how little we have used so far there will still be loads left at the end of the 60 days when it is supposed to be thrown away. My vet did mention that you may be able to keep going for an extra week or so after that but did not really commit. Can I ask how long other people usually use their vial for? Don't want to risk Mac's health so will ditch after 60 days if that's needed but on the other hand don't want to throw it away unnecessarily. PS do vets charge for giving you a prescription so you can buy elsewhere? Thanks Gill
I used my last vial for 4 months - still some left but thought it was time to get a new one for sterility sake but looking at my spreadsheet doesn't appear it lost any potency. One thing I don't do is push any excess drawn back in the vial - I squirt any excess in the air, let it drop on a cotton pad. The Prozinc website demo video on how to draw the insulin shows them pushing excess back in the vial but that just seems so wrong to me - you're potentially contaminating the insulin with barrel lubricant from the syringe when you push excess back in the vial. I don't know about the prescription charge - I get mine from the vet.
As long as the prozinc has been stored properly and does not have floaties, it should be okay. If Mac's numbers start to rise for no reason, the insulin could be losing its efficacy. I believe in the UK, vets charge for an Rx.
In the Uk vets do charge, but it would still be cheaper to get elsewhere. Paid £11 pounds for prescription, £54/vial a month ago. Vet was charging £99/vial....
