? 9/27 Sulls AMPS 50; +1 64; +2 79; +11 253 Need dosing advice after LOW AMBG

No shot yet. I think the starting dose may be too high unless it’s a faulty strip. You don’t have any data with one shot and no room for error. Stall, DON’T FEED and recheck in 20 minutes in case it’s a faulty strip. Post the bg in your title.

We did 2 tests. One was 50, the other one was 48 - BG is in my title AMPS 50. Or do you mean something else?

ok. when will we give the next shot then? Won't it mess up our PM shot if we give AM shot later?

No, you skip the AM cycle altogether and get a test at +11 and ask for shooting advice for the PM cycle.

For now, as @tiffmaxee said, do a test in 30 minutes. Need to make sure that Sulls is coming up.

Glad you caught that 50.

Ok Thank you. We're skipping the AM dose. Feeding him right now and will test again in 30 min.

What are your thoughts on changing PM dose?

Let’s see how the day plays out and the +11. After you get the +11 post with a ? Prefix and change the title to say need dosing advice after LOW AMPS

Good. Test again in an hour. If he were my cat I would drop the dose to 1.0 as you don’t know if he was even lower. See what others say. I won’t be online tonight but others will.

If you comes up more I would feed and grab a test two hours after eating to see if his bg comes down two hours after eating.

I remember welcoming you yesterday! Sorry this has happened to you so soon - but looks like you got the support you needed to make a good decision.

Clearly the starting dose is too high.

When you have a chance, please copy/paste the url from yesterday's condo into your condo/thread for today so those of us who commented yesterday can remember what was said.

Perhaps you can take this opportunity to tell us why you started at 1.5 U. Did your vet advise you to start there? How much does Sulls weigh?

The vet told us to start at 2u. The advice we kinda gotten here was to start at 1.25 or 1.50u for TR protocol. So we decided to start with 1.5 based on his weight and suggestions and monitor closely.

Sulls current weight is 17lb. His "ideal" weight should be 13lb.

PS: added url from yesterday at the beginning of this thread.

Ok, now I'm catching up.

This is your condo/thread from yesterday: https://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/09-26-sulls-amps-326.235969/#post-2645293

When I clicked on your link it took me back to 9/24 and I didn't comment that day...thought for a minute there I was losing it!!

Anyway...vets often prescribe 2 units to start - it's just standard issue - what's good for every cat, is good enough for your cat - and that's what they go with. Even Luci who was about 8 pounds when we started - the vet said, start with 2 units and get a fructosamine test next week...right....

Needless to say that was a disaster as well...but in the meantime, you've got a lot of help, support and guidance here already - just like I got...

I think you may want to wait and see how the day goes as far as the numbers - then decide on a dose tonight.

What kind of food has Sulls been eating (this may have been discussed previously, but I can't recall what was said, if anything). I see from your signature that he's eating FF pate now...has that always been the case?

Yes! The help from the community here has been amazing. And yes, the vet wasn't helpful at all.

Before his diagnoses Sulls ate a lot of kibbies and FF sliced. After the diagnoses (9/4) FF pate is all he eats.

Ok, I just checked on the catfood chart and those are 14% carbs. https://catinfo.org/chart/index.php

And the kibble is also high in carbs.

I suspect that the food switch has started to show up and have an impact on the lower blood glucose readings.

When did you finally remove all the kibble and FF sliced foods from Sulls diet?

We switched him to FF pate exclusively on 9/5 but didn't start his lantus until yesterday.

No tests until just the last couple of days - nothing prior to then?

I'm wondering if he was having lower numbers after the food switch?

Often cats do go back to very normal numbers after kibble/high carb foods are removed from their diet....not all (of course not Luci!)...but many do...

I have to leave shortly to visit with my grandson...but please continue to test this afternoon and post before your PM injection time so that you can get support/help about whether or not to shoot at all.

The dosage may have to be revisited or skipped altogether based on how the rest of today goes...better to have a day too high, than an hour too low!

Have a good afternoon....and I'll check on you when I get back. Please keep your SS up to date :)

Thank you, Sue! Enjoy the Sunday with your grandson :)

Originally that was our hope, to change Sulls diet and go without insulin for 2 weeks to see how the diet change affects him. After the 2 weeks on a new diet we did a curve 9/19 and he was basically in 200 (nadir 180).
So then we went to the vet again to ask for insulin prescription and there were all kinda issues and delays with that so we ended up having to bring Sulls back to the vet so he could "verify" his BG numbers since he didn't trust human meter... Anyhow, with all that we were only able to start Sulls on Insulin yesterday. And yes, we'll try our best to keep his SS updated cause I know it's super important to collect all the data.

We'll be testing throughout the day and will circle back for PM (and going forward) dose advice.
