Good. As short-duration as Novalin tends to be, I think you should be safe to leave him to snooze peacefully for the rest of the day until the next shot time :).

Next task to work on is to try to get some of your numbers into the spreadsheet. @Red & Rover (GA) made a good point above:

To enter numbers on the spreadsheet, you have to open it on your Google Drive. Go to your Google Drive and click on your spreadsheet.
You cannot edit by clicking on the link in your signature.

Let us know if you're having trouble with this. Having those numbers in there will really help us see what's going on with your boy :cat:.

I want to. put on my Moderator's hat and make an observation. We really and truly need you to start putting numbers into the spreadsheet. I would be extremely reticent, if not refuse to offer dosing assistance without the benefit of being able to see how insulin was working. This is especially the case for an insulin such as Novolin which is harsh and acts quickly. Providing a number here and there does not provide us a context to answer any of your questions. The lack of a spreadsheet puts everyone here in a position of attempting to be helpful but doing so may mean putting your cat at risk. We value safety about all else.

If you need help, please ask. Several people have posting the link the explains what the columns on the spreadsheet mean. If you still do not understand, we have members who will work with you to get some of the data transferred so you can see what things look like.

Please do not put members in the position of refusing to help or putting your cat in jeopardy by doing so.

Amaris I am dyslectic I would have a very hard time if I had to set up a spread sheet. I have looked at the links and still cant make heads or tails out of the whole business. BUT I also value all the help and knowledge here. I would BEG someone to help me set it up. I hope this maybe makes it a little easier to accept. You dont have to beg but only ask. We ALL want you and your kitty to thrive.:bighug:

Glad to hear he's doing well! Let us know what the vet says about switching to Lantus or Prozinc. I know you said that he has more experience and has had some success with Novalin, but if he's willing to try something like Lantus we can offer a lot of support and information here, too.

Spreadsheet looks fine from here, Amaris.

Fingers and paws crossed that all will go well with the vet tomorrow.

I've attached a copy of the Roomp-Rand published, peer-reviewed study about treating cats with longer-acting insulins. Maybe it might help in the discussions with your vet.

Be sure to let us know how you all get on. :)

I will fix the units. And yes. He went down to 203 without a shot. I took Rico and his brother to the vet today. The vet wants to keep Rico on the Novolin
But to increase it to 2 units instead of .4. Rico gained another 3 lbs. He is back up to 14 lbs. Dip his brother is at 30lbs. Next Saturday Rico goes back into the vet along with his sister.

Very good news on Rico's weight gain (well done!), but that is an enormous increase in dose, especially since he is already dropping to blue numbers on just 0.4U. He almost dropped to blue without any insulin at all that night! I worry that this higher dose will be unsafe for Rico.

I am going to tag some people who may be able to help with dosing fast-acting insulins (apologies if I tag anyone inappropriately, my brain cannot remember who does what at the moment).

Please don't raise the dose until you get some more feedback!

@Critter Mom
@Deb & Wink
@Elizabeth and Bertie
@Panic
@Red & Rover (GA)
@Sienne and Gabby (GA)

Nope nope nope don't touch the dose. You do not want Rico dropping below 100-120 on NPH at ALL. What is your vet trying to achieve by upping the dose right now? If they're concerned about the high pre-shots that's thanks to NPH's short duration, a longer-acting insulin is the only thing going to fix that.

Keep the dose, Rico is doing good from what I'm seeing.

Good idea on starting a new thread. I will keep an eye out for it!

Also: I see you hit green (91) last night-- wow! That is still a safe number (dark greens are good, light green is too low), but it definitely means that Rico does not need more insulin right now.

Hopefully if you start a new thread with a new title, it will attract some eyes with experience in Novalin usage to help guide you through this as Rico starts getting better numbers. Again, those kinds of numbers are very good for him, it just doesn't leave you a big safety margin with Novalin, so you have to be extra-cautious.
