New member - Andrea & Mason on Lantus (diagnosed 9/12/2020) - Food & Sensitive Stomach

I have two big cats too, healthy weight probably 14-15lbs, so I totally empathize with the cost factor of feeding all canned food. I would look at the labels and think "What?? I'm going to be feeding three cans a day per cat? $$$$!" It costs me $65 per month to feed my 95lb Lab, but now it will be probably $90 per month per cat if I continue feeding Purina ProPlan Prime Plus 7, which is reasonably priced if I buy a case of 24 cans at a time, compared to lots of other brands. I'll likely go back to at least some amount of FancyFeast, since it's half the cost.

As far as sensitive stomachs go, I can only relate the situation with my current two cats, both of which are prone to soft stools or diarrhea on certain foods. The Prime Plus 7 that I mentioned seems to work well for them. I feed the Turkey and Liver variety. I used to feed Fancy Feast classic pates (because they liked them, not because I had ever even considered the low-carb aspect) and those seemed to work well too. I have tried a wide variety of premium foods, but in general, they caused a good amount of stomach upset. I know lots of people feed Tiki Cat varieties, but those are a big problem for my cats. Right now, I'm using tiny bits as a reward while doing blood glucose testing, but if I give too much, soft stools or full-on diarrhea are the result.

Thanks for the note - it's great to hear how others are dealing! I will definitely look into that food as well so we can have some variety. We tried the Tiki Cat, but they did not seem to like the "raw" versus the pate so I ended up returning it (especially because it would have cost me $270 to feed them a month!) My cats were my first kids so I want to make sure they are healthy and happy!

Thanks - I will look into that! I paid $93 for one pen (Shoprite let me buy one versus buying the full box). Do you just use the prescription from the vet? Yes they seem to love each other (although sometimes they can't stand to be around each other)!

If you call Marks and give them the info , your vets name etc, they will contact them and your vet can fax over the prescription. You won't need another script after that

Which kitty is Mason?

Mason's the one on the right! Here's another picture of just him. Surprisingly they are not brothers, a year apart but everyone thinks we got them together.

I just wanted to share that I also have a 15.7 lbs, cat that was fed nothing but the dry Hills Weight Mgmt/Urinary food and have been able to switch to the FF wet food. It's true that I was already feeding 1/3 can every day as a "snack" to both my cats. So that helped. But removing that Hills was the best thing I've ever done even though I'm working on getting Emma to eat more. You can do it! :bighug:

He seems to love the wet food so far! Hasn't had any dry food in almost 2 weeks! :) He's a hungry little kitty though - constantly looking for food.
 
Andre, take a look at my spreadsheet and you can see when I stopped feeding the Hills. And guess what. That also includes the Hills Glucose Support dry food that the vet gave me to replace the other Hills food. That stuff is bad news for my kitty. She would eat the Hills GS like it was candy and it made her numbers skyrocket. Once I got her off that and kept testing, it made a world of difference.
If you can manage to test and put on a ss, then others can look and give you a helping hand. Just like they did me! I learned all that food stuff right here!
 
Not sure what to say about food here? Is the sensitive tummy perhaps due to allergies to certain proteins? Some cats need slower transitions to new food and will have looser stools with a quick switch. I have always been a fan of raw food - you get lots of different protein options and there tend to be a lot less additives. Plus it seems to help a lot of kitties with iff GI systems.
