Morning all. I stand in absolute awe over Olive's BG since the PMPS last night. She stayed in the yellow for the entire cycle. That's never happened before. So far this morning she's been doing equally as good and she's got a lot of pep in her step too. @+4 she was 170. I'm so glad I took the leap of faith in shooting when she was at 154 last night instead of waiting for her to rise to 200 as I've always done. Something positive is happening as a result.

I read yesterday’s condo. We tried to give her more insulin but every time we did she dropped too low. Many cats need some carbs to be able to take insulin safely. That’s why lc is under 10% and not 0%. I don’t think anyone suggested you feed high carb food nor to not feed any raw. I’m so glad she’s improving. I think if she can gain back some of the weight she lost that will help as well.

It definitely will help to get some weight back on her.
As far as food goes we still have no clue what she's supposed to be eating. In this area we find it totally confusing and that's only gotten worse over time, not better. Is it okay to feed raw alone? Or Is that simply too little carbs to balance the insulin? My guess is it's too low for what her body needs right now yet we want to keep on some raw. That's why we added Fancy Feast Pate to her raw, but she threw up when on that so we went to the DM knowing the two food are so very similar. We know she needs more calories to gain weight so what is best? What on earth are we supposed to feed her?? These are all my questions being thrown out there because we simply don't know what we are supposed to be doing to make Olive healthier. I know hubby wants to cancel the appointment with the holistic vet on Friday but I'm wanting to keep it only to see if she can offer a nutritional roadmap for her.

How about raw as her 2 main meals (with required nutrients mixed in) and pate as the snacks and mid day meals if you give them. You can add powdered egg white to any of her meals for a little extra calories and protein.

I think going to the holistic vet is worth pursuing, especially if the vet practices both conventional and holistic medicine.

She does. That's why we originally took our KD kitty to her. The ONLY thing I'm interested in is her nutrition by going. You guys have been helping with the insulin dosing.

My only question would be can her stomach handle that? I mean, she's used to having a mixed ratio of raw and DM spread all through the day. If I were to feed plain raw twice a day and then at all the other times the DM pate, would that be too much of a shock for her tummy?

I need to find that, regardless. Anything to add some extra calories.

Powdered egg yoke can be purchased from food fur life. It needs to be added slowly as it can cause diarrhea if added too fast. One of mine briefly had it but I lowered and the amount and all was good. My cat that I actually thought could benefit even more who has skin allergies seemed to break out so I stopped giving it to her.

ok, thanks for the info. I'm not sure if Olive has ever had egg as an ingredient since we adopted her. Egg allergies are always possible.

I just went to the site and this is what it said:
CURRENT EXPIRATION: 12/2020 NEW BATCH ON ORDER but due to COVID-related delays, we do not have a delivery estimate. Likely the end of the year.

Looks like this is going to have to wait.

Paula above actually suggested powdered egg white, not egg yolk, for extra protein and calories. Maybe you can buy that in a grocery store? If you still want to try egg yolks, the FoodFurLife website has a page describing how to make your own. I used to occasionally just pan fry or broil a little fresh egg yolk and mix that into Neko's food when I made her raw.

Olive's spreadsheet is looking much nicer. She's gotta feel better with slow BG changes instead of zooming up and down.

I'm new here but up until the last 2 weeks I had to worry about my girl not getting enough calories bc of her lack of appetite with the hepatic lipidosis. i know it's the opposite problem you're having (needing to gain weight) but here's my thoughts. I was using a combination of a few high calorie pate bc she was eating so little, she was still able to get get her calories in. So if your kitty is only eating 20g of food. that would be 20 cals in an 88 cal/85 gram can. The high calorie kitten food is 112 cals for a 85 gram can. so if she ate 20 grams of that, she would be eating 26 calories. I know they make a sensitive stomach one too.

I use:
Purina ProPlan (kitten) grain free classic- 112 cals/85 g can (chicken entree)
purina pro plan focus (kitten) classic- 101-103 cals/85 g can (depending on flavor)
Purina Pro plan prime plus (ages 7+) classic- 109-111 cals/ 85g can (depending on flavor)

These foods are 3% or less on carbs too.

Also, check out the sensitive stomach one and cross reference with the foods list and/or calculator.

That's what I thought she said, but when I saw the egg yolk it threw me off. I'm having one of those days. lol.

Oh yeah. She's notably more herself. When she naps, she's really looking like she's enjoying it. I'm feeling more relaxed because she's not zooming all over the map. She's had this mom in such a state of stress and worry for the last month and it's nice to begin to feel like I can breathe again and return to some resemblance of normal.

Oh, nice. I didn't get that far. I've spent the day playing catch-up on housework.

Welcome to the site! I greatly appreciate all your advice. Getting Olive on some kitten food crossed our minds too and you've already done the math on calories!;) Thanks so much for your feedback. I'm going to check into this. Your girl reminds me so much of Olive (Assuming that's her in the photo) before diagnosis when she was a nice weight. She would often lay on her back like that. She hadn't done that in months and months up until yesterday when she was feeling good and flopped on her back and made us smile.

Thank you! This page has been so helpful! yours is the first post I think I've commented on lol I'm slowly learning lol Glad I could help! Yes...that's my Henri girl in the picture. She has lost a bit of weight since the pic. I think here she was a whopping 18 lbs and currently she is 14. She also still has a naked belly and legs bc of all the tests and things they had to do at the ER vet. I'm hoping the fluff will grow back soon! That's awesome that your Olive is acting a bit like herself again! I know how much of a relief that can be! I hope she's able to gain some of her weight back!

I agree. I was completely overwhelmed when they told us Olive had diabetes because the vet was like, "Give her 1 unit twice a day" and that was that. No discussion of anything else. I was like a deer in headlights. Fortune brought me to this site and without the people here Olive wouldn't be where she is now and that's a fact. I'm still learning how to navigate the site so don't feel bad. Olive was about 18 pounds when we adopted her and we feared diabetes in her future so started her on one of those timed feeders where she was fed 5 times a day. It definitely helped her lose some weight. We got her down to 14. But it was too late. She still developed diabetes. She's now down to 9.5 pounds give or take an ounce! She's lost so much that all her skin has nowhere to go but flap like a flag when she walks. I'll be glad when we can get some weight on her. Here's hoping your girl's fur grows back quickly.
