She’s pretty happy today, for how she has been feeling so far this month. I really think she needs her teeth cleaned because they make a horrible sound when she chews bites of food. I can’t figure out how to describe it. I don’t know what it will take for her to be stable and healthy enough for anesthesia for a dental.

She had a poop this morning, another hard rock that looks way too big for her to have to pass.

I got a lot of food enticing suggestions on last post but most of them involve chicken which is sadly not working for her. I wonder if Parmesan cheese with all the salt in it and her IBD and CRF is a bad idea? I’m still feeding her a paste or soup mostly and I have to swirl it around and spoon in front of her face sometimes. I wish she would eat on her own. I miss that. I’m having a pain flare. I’m fatigued today. I wish I could trust that she would feed on her own.

Can someone please remind me or link to me the powdered Egg yolk making instructions? That is for constipation? It’s been mentioned a lot to me lately but I have trouble some days retaining detailed information and so I feel disorganized and clueless about it today. But I think I’ll get some help and see if I can make some soon.

Can anyone tell me how long a bag of LRS is good for? I’ve had this bag in use for ten days I think now, I thought that was the recommended limit.

Edit to add:
Consulted with CKD group and was advised 30 days if stored appropriately, as long as the fluid is not cloudy.

I'm glad Alice is happy today. Here is information on the egg yolk: https://www.foodfurlife.com/make-homemade-dried-egg-yolk-powder.html#/

ETA: Even though this mentions it helps with hairballs, I believe it also helps with constipation.

I hope you can get some rest and feel better soon. Sending prayers. :bighug::bighug:
Thanks for the link! I remember reading it, now that I’m taking a look at it, and it’s easier than I remember. I think I’ll make some for the cat at my brother’s too because she does have hairball issues! I really appreciate all your kindness and help and support, Carla. Thank you, as always. Scritches to Furball. :)

Happy is good! And yayyyy for poop! :bighug: Hopefully it softens up soon for Alice.
Hi, I see megacolon in your signature. What are the symptoms? It’s another thing I have wondered if I need to research for Alice. My head is so cluttered with research and multiple conditions right now it is sometimes hard to think straight.

So I went ahead and ordered a small bag of the purebites beef liver, going to make powdered egg yolk tomorrow.

checking with the CKD group to see if miralax can be safe at all, for now. :)

also I have some cow neck bones and I’m going to have roommate boil some up for me (I can’t prepare a meat dish to save my life, it’s been twenty years) and I’ll see tomorrow if the broth helps her feeding too.

Hi! I don’t want to clutter you with research, but there are multiple causes of megacolon, but the most common is idiopathic (unknown cause), where the colon loses its motility and becomes larger making stools hard, large and difficult to pass. It differs from general constipation though and is diagnosed via X-ray mostly along with other tests to rule out other conditions.

I would say that Cosmo always had FAR larger than normal #2’a his whole life and had occasional bouts of constipation and hard stools. It all was exacerbated by diabetes, I believe, and this led to his official diagnosis of megacolon. We had a tough go for a while in May-July, but we needed to do some things to treat it - including feeding a high fiber diet (RC fiber response, gastro moderate calorie). The diet is not ideal for his diabetes as it is Super high carb (29%) which can be challenging. Good news is that he is doing great right now and has had daily great, soft, substantial BMs since mid July. In our case, we didn’t have a choice except to change his food, not for everyone. Diabetes is still a struggle to balance. We are trying  Now that he is stable, we are trying to rebalance his carb intake to have a happy compromise.

I know you have a lot on your plate, and don’t want to overload you with info that might not be relevant, so I’ll leave it there. It can all be quite complicated with multiple conditions. :bighug:

@thebigfuzz honestly I wonder and worry maybe this is what is happening for her. Every poop is a hard chunk. She works really hard to pass them.

in her early uncontrolled diabetes days she had such a huge appetite. She had very voluminous stools but poor fecal score, I didn’t realize the chicken was her IBD nemesis for about a year. :(

bulking with fiber helps, maybe? So I could add psyllium husk or pumpkin(-again) and maybe that would help better? I had been afraid that too much bull would make things more difficult for her. But it could be the other way around?

I think it’s a possible role in her poop problems. It the only factor but part of it. The miralax helped soften them a little and I think they passed a little more easily for her, but they are still really big.

I briefly had a previously abandoned lion lop bunny who may have had megacolon, I did light bunny research on it back in 2018. He didn’t live long enough with us for me to look into it, only a few months, he was dumped and a stranger picked him up out of a parking lot and then he got passed onto us when I was just looking for help with bunny supplies. He was probably fed terribly for awhile and their GI systems are so sensitive. Sigh. He was the sweetest bunny, too. Even when he peed on my leg in bed. :p

how does the x-ray provide for diagnosis? Do they see a colon enlarged, or...?
