Lantus: TR or SLGS? and Units vs IU (Vetsulin vs. Lantus)

After a rocky start, my vet is showing herself to very supportive of testing in the face of scientific evidence of our shared goal...caring for Charlie. After initially advising NO testing (except weekly curve), I sent her the study linked here.

She was influenced, if not wholly persuaded.

We're switching Charlie from Vetsulin to Lantus.
Questions:

1. Are you following protocol TR or SLGS?

2. Is Vetsuin's U equivalent to Lantus' IU? If the dosing is different, I assume that's why U100 syringes are required for Lantus (over Vetsulin's U40)...?

I'm slogging my way through the Lantus dosing sticky [no disrespect to the authors: "slogging", only because my brain is old and it's hard!]

Hello and welcome over here. By the way, there is no such thing as catsulin - it's called caninsulin (or dog insulin). So glad you vet is on board with the switch to Lantus, a much better insulin for cats. :)

1. I started TR when I switched from Caninsulin to Lantus.
2. I made a mistake and didn't take the dose of the current insulin into consideration when we switched - wasted months getting back where I should have been. You can start at 1 unit of Lantus (yes, you need U-100 syringes with half unit markings as the concentration is different). Though it looks like 1 unit of Caninsulin wasn't doing much. I expect you'll eventually need to increase on Lantus once the depot is full.

Keep asking questions. We know there's a lot to learn at first and are happy to help.

I hope a new person isn't confused by my post title -- I caught my catsulin error and corrected it in the post, but couldn't change the post title.

Thanks for your TR experience--I'll definitely be leaning on this great community once the switch is made!

You can edit your title by looking on the right hand side, there's a link there that says 'Edit'...click on it and you can update your title to your hearts content :)
