    I'm sitting here just sobbing. I finally broke apart!
    If you look at Pumpkin's spreadsheet you will know why.

    Do I need to use something other than the Alpha Trak? Because i'm almost bankrupt buying strips. Vet recommended this one only...................
    I read the article on drawing up the insulin (have been using a pen). I read about possibly contaminating the vial with silicon. OMGosh!! I'm gonna lose my mind. I ran past the number this morning and pushed it back in the vial. So did I just contaminate the entire BRAND NEW vial of Lantus. Am I going to hurt my cat if I use it?
    I'm falling apart.

    Oh Katrina please don't cry I will tag someone for you that could answer your question @Wendy&Neko
    You don't have to use the Aloha Trak Pet Meter, yes those strips are outrageous
    I used to use it then switched to a human meter because of the price of the strips
    You just tell your vet you can't afford the strips anymore
    Most of us use the Relion Prime human meter from Walmart
    It's 9 dollars and the strips are 17.88 for 100 strips

    Hang in there I'm sure someone will give you an answer about the insulin :bighug::bighug:

    I replied to about the strips on your other thread, I agree with Diane.

    With the pen I don't think doing it just once will ruin the pen, someone else could elaborate but I imagine it's fine.

    Katrina calm yourself Listen to these wonderful folks. IT'S GOING TO BE OK.
    Were I you, I would TRY to have the conversation with your Vet, that this alpha track system is just TOO EXPENSIVE. Tell him/her..."You want me to be able to pay you, dont you?"
    Give him this website address and let him see for himself how we are a consortium of minds that have been working on this since forever. We dont have degrees but we ALL live it 24/7 .

    If he insists on you affording his system then you do what most of us do. Nod your head yes and say ok. Then follow your gut.;):coffee:

    Katrina. **** B-r-e-a-t-h-e! ****

    And have some hugs:

    :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

    It's early days and so many, many of us have felt completely and utterly overwhelmed like you seem to be right now. I've bawled my eyes out more times than I care to mention.

    It does - and it will - get better. And you're not alone with this, OK? (((Katrina)))

    I'm tagging @Marje and Gracie to ask her to chime in on your insulin question. (In all the many road bumps I've hit in my time that's one I managed to miss so I would not be comfortable offering you what would only be a speculative answer.)

    Try to remind yourself that Pumpkin didn't get diabetic overnight so it will take a bit of time for his body to learn to respond to insulin properly again. You've found a great place to get help and advice for Pumpkin - and also some TLC for yourself when you need a bit (and we all do!). In the meantime, have some more of these ...

    :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

    ... and admire that nice sunny yellow on Pumpkin's spreadsheet. :cool:

    Katrina, most of us have been where you are and understand how overwhelmed you feel. You can use almost any brand of human glucose meter. Many of us use the Walmart Relion brand meters because they are inexpensive to use. We used human meters long before the pet meters were even available.

    I used Lantus for years and never had any problems injecting the extra insulin back into the vial or pen.

    I feel for you, but don't throw that Lantus out!
    Now that you learned the proper way to use your insulin, just move forward with the best way. I've taken Lantus since it came on the market, and there have been several times I've done what you aren't supposed to do:facepalm:
    After coming to this website is when I learned about not shooting insulin back in the vial (didn't remember knowing that in the past). I'm fine, and I won't/can't believe you hurt your kitty!!!

    I was stubborn and used the AT for quite a while -- so glad I switched to the human meter. My vet didn't help me through getting my kitty off insulin, and didn't even know I changed to a human meter.

    Relax!! Hugs . . .

    Jeez, I am so happy I found you guys. I'm climbing off the edge. I think I'm just completely numb and raw. As an elementary teacher, I've been home since March.......We go back to work Tuesday 8/4 for face to face school. I'm nervous and anxious. I've never felt so "out of control" before......I usually am able to jump in and fix things............and I can't fix the virus or Pumpkin right now!!! My vet office is on COVID safety measures. You can't go in and see the vet. You pull up in the car and they come get your pet. Take them in, do what ever and bring them out. The vet either comes outside and talks to you or calls you on the phone. It's a little ridiculous....
    On a bright note........My other baby Miss Priss (15 yo) has been fighting cancer since last year........she was supposed to die..............but 2 surgeries later........10 months later........no cancer and she is still "prissing" around!!!! Whew!! I'm ready for 2020 to be over.
    This is the best thing I've ever found. Thank you to everyone.. You are my life savers...............

    Both of us are doing better. I think he definitely had a bounce from the low numbers. Now I just need to figure out what to talk to the vet about....... I'm gonna start a new thread and ask for advice on dosing, talking to vet, etc.
    thank you so much.
