My cat stopped walking on his hind legs 2 weeks ago. I've been online reading as much as I can and apparently B12 will repair nerve damage, but I wasn't sure if it was a lost cause for a 16 yr old cat.

I'm thinking of euthanizing him this week. Not enough people respond on this site and I cant do it all on my own anymore. I've been out of work since May and I'm in survival mode.

I have no experience with a cat with neuropathy. But methyl B12 (zobaline) and getting his blood sugar under control will fix the neuropathy.

How else can we help? Feline diabetes is a very treatable condition.

I've moved your other posts to this forum, which is where new members should post.

Hi my cat had neuropathy, this is what I used and many others members because it's cheaper than Zobaline

Hi Here is the link https://www.vitacost.com/vitacost-vitamin-b-12-methylcobalamin-5000-mcg-100-capsules-6

Alot of members use this , I use it myself you can buy it on line from Vitacost
    Vitamin B-12 Methylcobalamin -- 5000 mcg - 100 Capsules
It's 17.99 just be sure this is the one you buy
The only difference is the Zobaline has 200 mcgs of folic acid
So I buy the folic acid at the supermarket and crush it up and add it to the B-12
If you can't find the 200 mcg get the 400 mcg and cut it in half
The Vitacost brand is a capsule so just open it and pour the powder on the wet food
Has no taste, no need to crush it up
The Zobaline is 33.99 for 60 pills, too expensive
I saw a big improvement I'd say 3 months, could be sooner. One capsule a day

My cat had neuropathy and was treated with methyl B12. The neuropathy and diabetes are both very treatable conditions. It certainly is not a lost cause with a 16 year old cat. If you need further help please ask and we will try and help you.

    What insulin are you giving?

Hi, I saw in your other post the picture of your furbaby and I have to admit it made me cry. The thought of that beautiful baby being PTS because it has diabetes with neuropathy. I'm crying posting this.

Diabetes does not have to be a death sentence, and with control and B12 Methylcobalamin the neuropathy can be reversed. Please, I ask of you to try. If you absolutely can't then please find someone who will.

As for not getting the responses you had hoped for, sometimes it happens, but not because nobody cares. I started here during the holidays at the same time as some helpers left. There's a lot of post new people who all have a diabetic cat and looking for answers. Post will fall down the list rapidly on busy days. I got lost in the shuffle and I too wondered why no one wanted to help me. Then low and behold someone noticed what had happened and I got the help I needed. They also apologized for what had happened to me.

Please, if you need help use the ? In your post to help bring it to the attention of others. There are only a handful of people who have the knowledge we all seek. We need to be patient they really have their hands full. Also if you don't feel like you have gotten the attention you need and your post has dropped down the list post in it even with the word bump to bring it back to the top.

I just don't want to see this beautiful baby put to sleep.

My question, why don't we use Vitamin B12 500 mcg instead of 5000 mcg.

The way to resolve neuropathy is getting the numbers lower and b12 methylcobalamin supplements. Of course I would try it. Although it looks sad to watch them struggle, I have heard neuropathy in cats is not painful. I treat the cat not based on their age. My cat is going to be 17 in a couple weeks. She gets the treatments she needs as the need arises.

Cheaper than zobaline could be vitacost b methylcobalamin. Nutricost Vitamin B12 (Methylcobalamin) 2000mcg, 240 Capsules - Veggie Caps, Non-GMO, Gluten Free B12 Supplement https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IQB2UYS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_76RhFbY9WQA5R. I'd give it twice a day.

    To the OP,
My Trouble was about 12 when he got diabetes. He had terrible neuropathy. Poor guy could only walk a few feet and have to rest. Once we got him on insulin and added the Mythel B12 his neuropathy was resolved in a matter of weeks. (Some take longer) But it was like Troubles little body was craving the M-B12.

So I was changing my paralyzed cat's diaper and noticed blood coming out of his bum hole. Has anyone else experienced this? Also, his pee and poo smells very chemical-like.

I'm out of work thanks to covid and broke so this situation just makes me hate my life that much more. I'm taking him to a vet at 7am to see what's happening. I've gone to 3 vets in the area and I hate them, especially since they do nothing and charge me a zillion dollars which wipes out my food money. Yay---the American Nightmare!

Hi I'm glad you are back, I'm sorry but I have no idea why he has blood coming out of his butt hole or why his pee and poop smell chemical like.

    Hey everyone---
I'm sorry I've not responded. I'm still trying to figure out this website. I'm not alerted of new messages when I get onto the site for some reason.

I've been busy cleaning up, trying to find a job (i'm in tech and I hate it), and caring for a cat that really cannot care for himself. I'm exhausted. I have 2 other cats which basically are outside all the time. I can only focus on Bailey right now.

I've canceled my Thursday appointment to put him down, especially since I hate that vet. When I took him to them 2 weeks ago, they acted like him having trouble walking (he could still walk them) was no big deal. Now he's full-blown unable to use his hind legs. I've got a wheelchair for him now (attached), but he doesn't like it and just falls over on his side.

So yesterday I was shampooing my carpet and washing the floors, as well as doing laundry from all the towels I've been using for him. I don't have kids so I'm guessing this is as close as it will be for me. The place was a mess and i had to clean it because my place is small. I bathed him and them put him outside because it's warm. I covered him and put a leash with a harness on him so he wouldn't escape. Well, he escaped. He dragged himself under the patio and I couldn't get him for over 12 hours. It was like he just wanted to stay there and die. Animal control got him out this morning so I was grateful that ordeal was over.

The lady from animal control didn't seem to understand why he was unable to move his back legs. I'm sure they see awful things do to people so maybe she thought I broke his legs and he was hiding out of fear from me. I told her about diabetes, the vets i've seen don't understand diabetes, and he's 16 years old. I'm doing the best I can on my own, especially after my 3rd job loss since I moved to Colorado. She told me she would check back with me to make sure I took him somewhere to find out about him being paralyzed. I'm taking him somewhere else in the morning, a non-profit vet place that's not so expensive. Maybe he's got something more than diabetes?

I have to keep him in a diaper since he cannot even get into the litterbox. Have any of you experienced a weird smell from them? It doesn't smell like poo or pee. It's a medicinal smell, but i only give him Prozinc and Zobaline. It's almost metallic. When I changed his diaper and cleaned his bum hole, he pushed blood out of it which scared me. Any thoughts on this? I'll definitely find out in the morning. If they say he's got cancer or something like that, I'll make an "appointment" for next week :( He has a lump I can feel on one of his back legs so maybe....cancer?

Let me know your thoughts on all this. I appreciate it because there's just so much to research online and I do that too. I'm also testing him with Alpha Trak2. He was 249 after after being under the deck and missing his dose at night.

Not exactly. I just got a reading of 249 and it's still all over the place. I've not been able to get him regulated but I'm watching him closely with Alpha Trak now.

Here is the link for the spreadsheet, if you have trouble with it @Chris & China (GA)
will set it up for you
The reason for having a spreadsheet is so you can enter his numbers and our experienced members can look at it for you and give you advice
If you plan on doing one please put in as many test numbers you have.

As for the Alpha Trak I used to use it but the price for the strips got to be too expensive.
I switched to a human meter which most of us use
You can buy the Relion Prime for 9 bucks and 100 test strips for 17.88 at Walmart

Bailey has been eating less and less. I pretty much am happy if he eats anything. I even broke out a can of tuna in hopes he would gobble it down since i know thats his weakness. He just drank the liquid pretty much. When he won't eat anything at all, I can at least count on him with some kibble.

Thank you. I'm just tired of going through everything on my own. I put down another cat 3 yrs ago from diabetes. I drove from Indianapolis to Oklahoma to get that cat. I had a stable job at the time and honestly thought I could afford all the vet visits. Then I kept getting laid off there too. He eventually got pancreatitis and the vet said it would be around 7k to put him in intensive care. I was unemployed and had no money. I still cry thinking about him because he was such a sweet cat. I only knew him for 2 yrs but he was an angel and I couldn't save him. I refused to go through this with this guy, who I've had since he was 4 yrs old. It's not fair. These are my children. I didn't know what I was getting myself into with diabetes. It's like going back to college and getting another degree---there's just so much to learn.

I've been giving 2 Zobaline pills a day to my cat for 2 weeks and i've not noticed any difference. I'm concerned he may have something other than neuropathy. He doesn't seem to want to use the wheelchair I got him either.

Syringe it slowly a little bit at a time, put it on the side of his cheek
This poor kitty in that wheel chair and dragging himself under the porch, Incan just cry right now .
I pray that you will get some answers tomorrow :bighug::bighug:

When he dragged himself under my little patio with all the dirt and spiders, he wasn't in his wheelchair. He still has some spark in him to be a little fart I guess, so that's a good sign.

I've got syringes. I'll have to feed him tomorrow because it's almost 1am here and I've got to be at the vet place in 6 hours. Yikes. I should try and sleep. I also need to set up the spreadsheet that I saved to my signature.

Thank you for all your help.

    Hi there.

It can take some time for a kitty to recover from severe neuropathy so please don't lose heart. Here's a video of the recovery from neuropathy of a cat called Tootsie so that you can see what's possible with B12 methylcobalamin supplementation as an adjunct to diabetes treatment.

I'm very sorry to hear about the kitty you lost to pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is the pits.

    Hey Diana,

It's good to read your words. I'm not good: mental and physical health both pants, hence my uberprotracted absence. But although I haven't posted for absolute eons don't think for one minute that all you good people and kittehs haven't been in my thoughts and my heart. I've wanted to come back many, many times; just wasn't able to.

B vitamins wouldn't cause this, and may help keep him from becoming anemic. Was it bright red blood or like bloody diarrhea?

How do you cat’s hind legs feel? Are they warm to the touch as the rest of his body? Or cool? Cats can get strokes that cause trphrm to lose hind leg function.

Hoping the vet has answers for you.

This morning I went to a nonprofit vet that had reasonable prices and is very kind and thorough. I waited 5 hours to find out Bailey had very multiple health complications. He had something much more serious than neuropathy. The doctor suspected cancer, among many other things. He was bleeding through his bumhole.

I had to say goodbye. Thanks for all your kindness and help. I had to let him go. He can now romp and play they way he used to do.

Run free little Bailey, you are free of pain.

Deb I am so sorry for your loss, Bailey knew he was loved. You gave him the hardest gift a furparent ever has to give.

I worry that he won't be able to find me since he wasn't PTS at my home. I know that seems weird but I don't want him to be alone.

Thank you for all your help.

I'm glad there's so many people who see cats as the special creatures that they are. This forum is wonderful.

Once i get my wits about me, I will search the forum on how to donate what supplies I have. I was given a printout of grants that help cover costs for people with sick pets. I will upload that as well.

    You were right.

I thought it was diarrhea at first, but I wasn't sure. After doing laundry, the spots were still on a towel. I poured hydrogen peroxide on those areas and they fizzled. Women know well that blood fizzles whenever hydrogen peroxide is poured onto it. I've saved many sheets and underpants with that trick!

He only stayed in your home....he lived in your heart.

There's a fable I'd like for you to read, but I'll warn you....it will make you cry. But, as the fable says, in your tears there is healing. The official name of it is "The Loving Ones", but I always called it "You have chosen tears". I hope it brings you peace.

Fly free sweet Bailey and land softly. There are lots of friends at the Bridge to welcome you. Send your mama a sign that you're happy, healthy and waiting for the day when you will both be together again forever. cat_wings>o

My cat was not with me at home when he passed. I was worried about the same thing. I remember just sitting in the car crying and calling to him to get in the car and follow.

He started visiting about a week or two later. He ran out of the closet quickly past my feet and under the bed. I jumped back because I thought I was going to step on him. another time I saw him run away from the vacuum. I've felt him rub my legs and jump on the bed and snuggle next to me. My son felt him rub on him. He saw him jump off his cubbies then disappear. While playing on the floor with his toys he looked up and Zimmy was peeking over the edge of the coffee table watching.

Your cat is fine. You are connected by your heart... He knows where you are. Close your eyes and visualize him visiting. Ask him with your heart to visit our show a sign.

The hind legs felt normal. I made sure to stretch his legs and do the little bicycle exercises with both legs so he would still get blood moving in his legs. His toe beans were cold, so I'd use a heating pad and some infrared light to warm them, or i'd rub them. He could feel in his legs and his feet. The doctor believed he must have had some sort of neurological dysfunction most likely brought on by cancer. They didn't do tests because they said his health was just in such bad shape. His bladder was full and hard, but couldn't empty so what did come out was overflow. She said his legs not working wasn't neuropathy, but something more serious. He even had a heart murmur which no vet ever told me that before and he's old enough someone somewhere should have noticed it. I've lived in so many different states and cities in the 12 yrs he's been with me. I have no faith in most vets anymore. It was worth waiting 5 hours outside under the shade just to get a full prognosis so I could make the best decision for him. I've had to have a cat euthanized before when I didn't have the money to heal pancreatitis, which is a pain I'll carry with me forever.

You folks are so sweet. Thank you. The only emotional support I have is my therapist, who I haven't seen this week; I was too angry at the world and needed to be alone. I have other cats though and one that helped me get through euthanizing another diabetic I had 3 yrs ago because of pancreatitis is cuddled up next to me. Thank goodness for him. Thank goodness for everyone here.

That's so beautiful. If you have more stories, I'd love to hear them. Alas, nothing like that has happened to me. Even the kitty I had to PTS 3 yrs ago never visited, and I was such a wreck I had to quit my job. I was in the room when they gave him the injection. I guess I still had hope he would be okay. Then he was gone instantly and I wanted to die. I have yet to take his little box out of the bag I was given with his ashes. I went all the way to Oklahoma City from Indianapolis to get that kitty. I stupidly thought I could save him, but I didn't know enough and he developed pancreatitis. I was laid off, as per usual, so I couldn't afford to keep him alive. Isn't that insane? Our horrible medical system even spills over onto our pets. Have enough money and they'll live. Life has broken my heart so many times there's hardly any fully functioning piece left anymore.

Thank you so much for your kindness. I unfortunately found out this was way more than diabetes. I had a full exam done so I could figure out what was best for him. His little body was just giving out, so I had to let him go. The vet was a nonprofit that gets a lot of donations in town and they've got a great reputation. I knew whatever they told me was honest and wasn't just to get money, like vets I've had in the past. He had some sort of neurological problem most likely brought on by cancer. He was bleeding from his bum. His urine smelled abnormal, which the vet even said they noticed most likely meant cancer. He had a heart murmur. His bladder was full and hard, and couldn't empty. No wonder I hadn't heard him purr in a while. Poor guy must have been in so much pain.

His ashes are ready, so I'll get them this week. :(

Couldn't figure out how to do this, so I'm just going to quote my original quote. It's been 4 days and Bailey's ashes are ready for me.

Thank you to everyone here with their positive words of encouragement, even after the sad reality came to fruition. I'll always love my sweet boy Bailey, who never hunted and even brought a live baby bird and a living cidaca to me from the outside as a gift, or for me to help? I guess I'll never know.

Everyone loved Bailey, especially the ladies. When I first got him from a neighbor who didn't have empathy for animals like I do, I found out he was named Jizz. I immediately changed his name to something respectable and less creepy. Yes, it was a man who named him that. He was passed around from person to person until I got him. Twelve years I had him.

Here's Bailey when he was just 4 yrs old and living outside where a neighbor was feeding him, (poorly).

I'll never forget those blue eyes. I just hope he's doing okay wherever he is.

Oh he's so beautiful. I know how hard it is to say goodbye. It's the grief we know we are going to have to inevitably face when we give our hearts to a pet. It can be heart wrenching. You did the best you could for him and he knew he was loved.

Very understandable: they're the sort of eyes you could lose yourself in. So soulful.

That's a lovely picture of Bailey, such a handsome boy.

I think he's probably doing okay, because he is tucked up safe in your heart.

I'm glad that Bailey found his way to you, Deb. You filled his life with love and caring. What kitty could wish for more.
