Feeling extremely defeated. My poor fur baby sugars will not regulate. We are all over the map he was 4.2 yesterday at 3:33 then 10.1 at 7:30 and now this morning 14.1 I am feeling so defeated and lost. I just want to help him and I don't know how. I will be calling my vet today to ask there suggestions. But just need so support from others who have dealt with this. He was diagnosed about a month ago. Thanks to everyone for all their support.

The first few weeks of learning about feline diabetes can be completely overwhelming. So, welcome to the best place you never wanted to be.

We are going to overwhelm you with questions. So, here are a few to start:
  • I'm assuming you're Tanya. What's your kitty's name?
  • What insulin are you using.?
  • What's the dose history of your insulin?
  • What are you feeding your cat? Is it canned, pouches, or dry or a combination?
  • It sounds like you're home testing.. That's one big hurdle you've already overcome.
I'm sure others will chime in with more questions.

Those numbers are not bad at all. The 4.2 (75 for this of. us in the US) is likely what caused the subsequent numbers to head skyward. Even the 14.1 (254) is not bad by any means. Given that you likely had no idea how long your cat has been diabetic, it's likely that he's no longer used to being in normal numbers. A lower range, normal number like the 4.2 may have cause the numbers to subsequently bounce into higher ranges due to an overreaction of the liver and pancreas.

I'm also going to give you a bit of homework. Could you take a look at this link on helping us to help you? It will get you started on some of the basics like setting up your signature and a spreadsheet. The latter is helpful so you can track your kitty's progress and it also allows us to follow along and offer suggestions.

Welcome Tanya!!!

I just want to add that we say here felines diabetes is a marathon not a sprint. I know and relate to the feeling of defeat, but a month is really not that long to be doing the sugar dance and it does take time and patience to finesse the dose and get your cat regulated. It took Minnie months but I wasn’t home testing so you’re already way ahead of where I was in the beginning! If you can look at the link Sienne provided and answer the questions, we’ll be able to help you better.

hang in there!!! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi yes my name is Tanya and my fur baby is Cooper. I am using Lantus and we are currently at .5iu we were at 1.5 but the vet lowered it. He eats fancy feast and that alone. Yes I have been home testing and I hate it but know it needs to be done. Thank you for all the information I will do my homework and get those things done.
