Can Zobaline work for a 16 yr old cat?

My cat stopped walking on his hind legs 2 weeks ago. I've been online reading as much as I can and apparently B12 will repair nerve damage, but I wasn't sure if it was a lost cause for a 16 yr old cat.
 
I'm thinking of euthanizing him this week. Not enough people respond on this site and I cant do it all on my own anymore. I've been out of work since May and I'm in survival mode.
 
I have no experience with a cat with neuropathy. But methyl B12 (zobaline) and getting his blood sugar under control will fix the neuropathy.

How else can we help? Feline diabetes is a very treatable condition.

Hi my cat had neuropathy, this is what I used and many others members because it's cheaper than Zobaline

The only difference is the Zobaline has 200 mcgs of folic acid
So I buy the folic acid at the supermarket and crush it up and add it to the B-12
If you can't find the 200 mcg get the 400 mcg and cut it in half
The Vitacost brand is a capsule so just open it and pour the powder on the wet food
Has no taste, no need to crush it up
The Zobaline is 33.99 for 60 pills, too expensive
I saw a big improvement I'd say 3 months, could be sooner. One capsule a day

Hi, I saw in your other post the picture of your furbaby and I have to admit it made me cry. The thought of that beautiful baby being PTS because it has diabetes with neuropathy. I'm crying posting this.

Diabetes does not have to be a death sentence, and with control and B12 Methylcobalamin the neuropathy can be reversed. Please, I ask of you to try. If you absolutely can't then please find someone who will.

As for not getting the responses you had hoped for, sometimes it happens, but not because nobody cares. I started here during the holidays at the same time as some helpers left. There's a lot of post new people who all have a diabetic cat and looking for answers. Post will fall down the list rapidly on busy days. I got lost in the shuffle and I too wondered why no one wanted to help me. Then low and behold someone noticed what had happened and I got the help I needed. They also apologized for what had happened to me.

Please, if you need help use the ? In your post to help bring it to the attention of others. There are only a handful of people who have the knowledge we all seek. We need to be patient they really have their hands full. Also if you don't feel like you have gotten the attention you need and your post has dropped down the list post in it even with the word bump to bring it back to the top.

I just don't want to see this beautiful baby put to sleep.

My question, why don't we use Vitamin B12 500 mcg instead of 5000 mcg.

The way to resolve neuropathy is getting the numbers lower and b12 methylcobalamin supplements. Of course I would try it. Although it looks sad to watch them struggle, I have heard neuropathy in cats is not painful. I treat the cat not based on their age. My cat is going to be 17 in a couple weeks. She gets the treatments she needs as the need arises.

Hi Patty, I also looked at that precious face that she posted of her kitty, I hope she comes back on and see all the responces, I can't imagine putting that poor kitty to sleep. Like you said she can't take care of him find someone who will

To the OP,
My Trouble was about 12 when he got diabetes. He had terrible neuropathy. Poor guy could only walk a few feet and have to rest. Once we got him on insulin and added the Mythel B12 his neuropathy was resolved in a matter of weeks. (Some take longer) But it was like Troubles little body was craving the M-B12.
If I missed your first post I humbly apologize. I'm not one of the awesome experts here but I try to welcome everyone then follow up on that welcome. Sometimes I get overwhelmed or have things I need to get done and I may have missed your first post.

Please know this.
We are a community of dedicated kitty cat lovers tied together by this disease. We want each and every kitty to overcome all the hills and valleys of this daunting disease. We want to help you. So I was changing my paralyzed cat's diaper and noticed blood coming out of his bum hole. Has anyone else experienced this? Also, his pee and poo smells very chemical-like.

I'm out of work thanks to covid and broke so this situation just makes me hate my life that much more. I'm taking him to a vet at 7am to see what's happening. I've gone to 3 vets in the area and I hate them, especially since they do nothing and charge me a zillion dollars which wipes out my food money. Yay---the American Nightmare!

Hi I'm glad you are back, I'm sorry but I have no idea why he has blood coming out of his butt hole or why his pee and poop smell chemical like.

I assume you are home testing , would you like to set up a spreadsheet and put his BG numbers in.

Hey everyone---
I'm sorry I've not responded. I'm still trying to figure out this website. I'm not alerted of new messages when I get onto the site for some reason.

I've been busy cleaning up, trying to find a job (i'm in tech and I hate it), and caring for a cat that really cannot care for himself. I'm exhausted. I have 2 other cats which basically are outside all the time. I can only focus on Bailey right now.

I've canceled my Thursday appointment to put him down, especially since I hate that vet. When I took him to them 2 weeks ago, they acted like him having trouble walking (he could still walk them) was no big deal. Now he's full-blown unable to use his hind legs. I've got a wheelchair for him now (attached), but he doesn't like it and just falls over on his side.

So yesterday I was shampooing my carpet and washing the floors, as well as doing laundry from all the towels I've been using for him. I don't have kids so I'm guessing this is as close as it will be for me. The place was a mess and i had to clean it because my place is small. I bathed him and them put him outside because it's warm. I covered him and put a leash with a harness on him so he wouldn't escape. Well, he escaped. He dragged himself under the patio and I couldn't get him for over 12 hours. It was like he just wanted to stay there and die. Animal control got him out this morning so I was grateful that ordeal was over.

The lady from animal control didn't seem to understand why he was unable to move his back legs. I'm sure they see awful things do to people so maybe she thought I broke his legs and he was hiding out of fear from me. I told her about diabetes, the vets i've seen don't understand diabetes, and he's 16 years old. I'm doing the best I can on my own, especially after my 3rd job loss since I moved to Colorado. She told me she would check back with me to make sure I took him somewhere to find out about him being paralyzed. I'm taking him somewhere else in the morning, a non-profit vet place that's not so expensive. Maybe he's got something more than diabetes?

I have to keep him in a diaper since he cannot even get into the litterbox. Have any of you experienced a weird smell from them? It doesn't smell like poo or pee. It's a medicinal smell, but i only give him Prozinc and Zobaline. It's almost metallic. When I changed his diaper and cleaned his bum hole, he pushed blood out of it which scared me. Any thoughts on this? I'll definitely find out in the morning. If they say he's got cancer or something like that, I'll make an "appointment" for next week :( He has a lump I can feel on one of his back legs so maybe....cancer?

Let me know your thoughts on all this. I appreciate it because there's just so much to research online and I do that too. I'm also testing him with Alpha Trak2. He was 249 after after being under the deck and missing his dose at night.

Thank you. I have no family so I've been having some meltdowns here and there. After finding out the federal unemployment funds weren't being extended, that just scared me even more.

Bailey has been eating less and less. I pretty much am happy if he eats anything. I even broke out a can of tuna in hopes he would gobble it down since i know thats his weakness. He just drank the liquid pretty much. When he won't eat anything at all, I can at least count on him with some kibble.

Thank you. I'm just tired of going through everything on my own. I put down another cat 3 yrs ago from diabetes. I drove from Indianapolis to Oklahoma to get that cat. I had a stable job at the time and honestly thought I could afford all the vet visits. Then I kept getting laid off there too. He eventually got pancreatitis and the vet said it would be around 7k to put him in intensive care. I was unemployed and had no money. I still cry thinking about him because he was such a sweet cat. I only knew him for 2 yrs but he was an angel and I couldn't save him. I refused to go through this with this guy, who I've had since he was 4 yrs old. It's not fair. These are my children. I didn't know what I was getting myself into with diabetes. It's like going back to college and getting another degree---there's just so much to learn.

I've been giving 2 Zobaline pills a day to my cat for 2 weeks and i've not noticed any difference. I'm concerned he may have something other than neuropathy. He doesn't seem to want to use the wheelchair I got him either.

Understood it's better than nothing at all. Do you think you can syringe feed him some Fancy Feast add some water to it so that it will go through a syringe.
Syringe it slowly a little bit at a time, put it on the side of his cheek
This poor kitty in that wheel chair and dragging himself under the porch, Incan just cry right now .

When he dragged himself under my little patio with all the dirt and spiders, he wasn't in his wheelchair. He still has some spark in him to be a little fart I guess, so that's a good sign.

I've got syringes. I'll have to feed him tomorrow because it's almost 1am here and I've got to be at the vet place in 6 hours. Yikes. I should try and sleep. I also need to set up the spreadsheet that I saved to my signature.

It can take some time for a kitty to recover from severe neuropathy so please don't lose heart. Here's a video of the recovery from neuropathy of a cat called Tootsie so that you can see what's possible with B12 methylcobalamin supplementation as an adjunct to diabetes treatment.


I'm very sorry to hear about the kitty you lost to pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is the pits.
