Hi Everyone,

My name is Liz and my cat’s name is Fizgig.
I will create a sig shortly with info but I’m freaking out so wanted to post first.

About 7 or 8 weeks ago Fizgig was diagnosed as diabetic he’d lost a lot of weight after putting him on a diet. He had been eating Iams for sensitive stomachs free feeding and then when I started limiting it to twice a day he started losing weight. He went in for a check up and they said he was perfect weight and in great condition but needed a teeth cleaning so we scheduled that. When I took him in 2 weeks later for dental he’d lost 2lbs so the did some tests. Tests showed he was diabetic. After his diagnosis they put him on the Royal Canin Glycobalance wet and dry (if I wanted to keep him on dry) and after 3/4 of his food I was to give him 1 unit of prozinc insulin. He was to get his insulin twice a day after eating.

He was doing fine but not gaining weight. When I called the vet they told me on 3 different occasions when I asked if he needed to be rechecked that he wasn’t scheduled to be rechecked until October. I thought that was odd but figured the vet knew...

July 10th I went on vacation and left Fizgig with a friend so she could continue his insulin and strict diet. The Glycobalance wet food was out of stock everywhere except online which could take up to 10 days to process due to needing vet approval. I went ahead and purchased every can (10 total) I could find and the dry food. When my friend ran out of the wet she started feeding him the Glycobalance dry food. I came back Saturday the 18th and picked him up. They said everything was great but she noticed he was drinking a lot of water.

Sunday I went by the vets office to get more food and chat about the excessive water drinking. They recommended I bring him in Monday (today) morning. I fed him Sunday night he ate really slow considering he’s usually a super fast eater I gave him his shot and everything seemed fine. This morning he was super lethargic and would not eat so I did not give insulin. They had told me if he’s super lethargic to put a dab of karo on his gums so I did that at 7am. He was sooo lethargic still.

I dropped Fizgig off this morning and they called me shortly after to let me know his blood sugar was over 400 and they needed to keep him as he was showing signs in his urine analysis that there were keytones. So they kept him all day on fluids and wanted him to go to emergency overnight for continued IV therapy but I couldn’t afford that so they said I could bring him home. If he ate his dinner they told me to give him his insulin.

I brought him home and offered food but he refused and is still refusing to eat and has now thrown up what I guess he ate while at the vet today.

I have ordered (today) the Alphatrack 2 meter but it won’t arrive for a few days.

I’m just not sure if I should rush him to emergency or if it’s ok to wait until tomorrow when he goes back to the vet for another day of IV therapy. Is his throwing up something I should be really worried about and rush to emergency? He still has his catheter in his arm so I’m keeping him in his carrier because he keeps trying to get to his arm and run upstairs to hide under the bed. I’m just worried Mx

Can you change the subject of your post to 911 that way members now it’s urgent? I have a few thoughts the most important being that a diabetic should not be eating only twice a day especially with that much weigh loss. Diabetics cats cannot process the nutrients in the food efficiently and they lose weight even when eating. And there sugar in their urine so they lose weight just by peeing too. Twice a day works for dogs but typically not for cats who are grazers. I’m not an expert on Ketones but I think it happens when cats are not eating enough so the first priority is to get him eating and eating more calories a day. Did they give you an anti nausea med to get him eating again? That’s super important with ketones

No, they did not give me anything just Said he was stable and keep an eye on the catheter still in his arm (they wrapped it) and bring him back first thing in the morning. I keep offering him his food and he’s not interested at all.
 
A cat with ketones needs food and fluids. Ketones is a life threatening condition and my gut feeling is that if they wanted him to stay overnight, the best thing for you to do is to take him back so they can make sure he gets the appropriate care.

If ketone levels are above trace that is an ER visit as they can quickly develop DKA which cannot be handled at home and is difficult still to overcome in the ER. There are ketostix strips where you can check the urine for the amount of ketones present if they did not give you results or just take him to the ER. They don't always make it till morning.

We do have recommendations to help with finances, such as CareCredit and Diabetic Cats In Need, among others.

Thank you I’m using care credit now. Im keeping a close eye on him and I’m taking him to the emergency vet Now.
 
I second the ER visit. Fluids are so very important. They flush out the ketones. The best place for him is the emergency vet. They will give fluids.

Ask about anti-nausea and anti-vomiting meds (they can be given together). Also ask about an appetite stimulate.
The reason being:
Not enough insulin + not enough food + an infection or inflammation or something going on.
When you get him home, it is important not just that he eats enough, but that he eats 1 1/2 times what he should. The insulin dosage can be worked around that.

It is great that you will be home testing. However, the Alpha Trak won't be here for a few days and the strips are crazy expensive. You will be going through a lot more strips than you think. A lot of people in the US use the Relion Prime. You can pick it up at Walmart or any drugstore and the strips are easy on the pocketbook. And you will be able to start testing right away.

Let us know how it goes at the vet.

I second the ReliOn. It’s what I use now as I go through strips super fast and it’s the most affordable. You can get 100 for $17.99. I also think it’s easier to use.
 
Here is some reading for you on ketones and DKA. You want to avoid DKA if possible and ketones are your warning sign. As is lethargy and inappetance. You absolutely need to start home testing and a human meter is just as good (better in price) than the AT. His dose is probably too low and you'll need to home test to get that right. You will also want to get him eventually onto a low carb food. There is no need for the glycobalance which isn't necessarily low carb or the best. But don't change his food now, wait until you are home testing.

Thank you, Everyone. Fizgig is at the emergency vet now I’m waiting for them to call due to Covid I had to just drop him off. I feel better knowing someone way more qualified has him and will monitor him through the night. I’ll update once the vet calls.
 
Hey Everyone, checking in here. Last night when I picked Fizgig up from the vet she said the got his BG down to 150 so were comfortable letting him go home (then bring back this morning).

I got him home and he went to his food bowl (they gave him anti nauseous in hospital). I offered him a can of food first glycobalance and then my other cats fancy feast chicken tuna flakes (14%protein). He licked them but did not eat. He then went to potty and hid under the bed. No insulin given. I tried to get him out to put the appetite stimulant on his ear but he was so over me and would not come out.


At 3:10am I took my dog out to potty when I when I came back Fizgig was waiting for me at the door. I put the appetite stimulant on his ear at about 3:25am and at about 5:25am he acted like he wanted food so I offered him both kinds as well as straight boiled chicken. He ate some chicken and licked the food. I gave him 1/2 a unit Of prozinc Per vet if he doesn’t eat give 1/2 if he eats all his food give a whole unit. (they have him on 2 units a day). I dropped him off at the vet this morning for fluid therapy again. He was still slow and weak this morning but able to focus on me when I said his name.

Hi Liz I know exactly what you are going through ok first Dont be surprised if they want to test Fizgig for pancreatitis. Second there are 2 different nausea medications that can be used that work differently Cerenia and Ondansetron ( human Zofran ) my cat also would not Eat this forum suggested I tried meat baby food ( no garlic or onion )
I had to hand feed her but to my surprise she did eat it . I would just try a jar to see if Fizgig will eat something anything is worth a try when they are not eating . If Fizgig is eating the boiled chicken that is better to me . I would also let the more experienced members respond too . I just understand the frustration . Liz here if you just need to talk or vent
 
Eating is important with ketones. Try the baby food like Roe suggested, tuna, and any other kind of food he may eat right now because ketones trumps the diabetes for the moment.

I’m glad he’s acting a little better. You’ll need and anti nausea med as well and I’m surprised they didn’t send you home with one. Cerenia, which is probably what they gave him, doesn’t work well for all cats. It didn’t for Minnie. Ondansetron did. Please ask your vet about ondansetron because you’ll need to have anti nausea meds at home that you can give him to get him eating. At one point Minnie needed ondansetron and metoclopramide because just one wasn’t enough. An apetite stimulant does not work if the cat is nauseated.

What did they say about the ketones?

Yes! So is insulin. If Fizgiz doesn’t eat, you may need to syringe some food so you can give insulin. Ask the vet for some AD food as it is high calorie and easy to syringe, all meat baby food is good too. Also pick up some ketone test strips from the pharmacy, as well as a glucose test meter and strips.
 
Hi everyone. Fizgig is home and no catheter yay! He did not eat well for me tonight about 1/4 can of glycobalance little less than half of fancy feast cod, sole, shrimp and a little bit of boiled chicken. I got him to eat enough for his insulin so insulin shot given.
I have not received my meter yet should be here tomorrow. I gave some keytones strips but no idea how to make that happen as he’s mad at me and hiding.
He has to go back to the vet in the morning to check his weight for hydration levels. I’ll pick up some meat baby food as well to see if that helps.
The vet said he had very few keytones in his urine with his urinalysis today so that’s good. I wish he wasn’t so unstable but I guess that’s expected after what he’s been through,

YAY!! Happy news!

We need it to stay this way so, please please please please with sugar on top, ask for anti nausea meds. You need them and he needs them. Please go back and read my post about it. I can’t stress this enough
 
Elizabeth I have to go out but I just wanted to say that you will need to keep offering food throughout the cycles. It is really really important she eats and eats as much as possible.
Try and get a urine sample to test the ketones.
And I agree with the others. Ask for some cerenia and ondansetron to have at home. Nauseated cats won’t want to eat. Even with an appetite stimulant which should only be given after an antinausea med.

Hey Everyone, just checking in. Fizgig is better. I had to syringe feed him last night in order to get enough food to get the insulin. He did in fact get his full unit of Prozinc at 11:55pm.

I’ve pretty much at this point just started offering food every single time I see him. (Side note: he’s pretty not happy or trusting of me right now. He’s not used to being shoved in his carrier and taken so many places in such a short amount if time. He was/is clearly stressed and depressed right now. Not to mention feeling pretty crappy sick too). I wish I had a kitten to perk him up lol he LOVES kittens. Anyways..

3:30am appetite stimulant on the ear. He ate a little (1/4 can of fancy feast) about 4:00am

This morning he went for a weight check. They were very happy he maintained his weight and hydration. They said he was not as perky as he was the previous day so they wanted to keep him to do fluids and more glucose checks and insulin. (I told them he had the full unit at 11:55pm they still wanted to keep him) so, when they heard again he had the full unit they said I could bring him home as long as I could syringe feed and keep him hydrated and getting insulin.

Home from vet-
I started offering food baby food, various flavors of fancy feast, calorie booster gel, he would lick them all but not actively eat and stay interested in eating. At noon I syringed a jar of baby food and a teaspoon (maybe more) of the calorie gel and then gave 1 unit of insulin.

I work from home right now due to Covid so able to keep a close eye on him. He slept a good bit on the back of the chair all sprawled out which he hasn’t done all week.

I got off work at 7pm and fed my dog Dusty and my other cat Bowie and of course Fizgig is in the kitchen asking for food so a can of gravy lovers chicken hearts and liver. He (Fizgig) ate 1/2 the can only his own. Yay!!

I offered him a jar of beef baby food and calorie
booster he enjoys the baby food not a fan at all of calorie booster lol.

11:30pm offered a can of gravy lovers some fish something. He ate almost the whole can, had a few licks of baby food and got a full unit of insulin. YAY!!

We are not out of the woods yet but I’m starting to feel less anxious and more hopeful. As of right now he went to hide from me after getting poked again but, he looked perky doing it.

Hey Elizabeth, I’m not sure you’re reading our replies. What we do to let each other know is “like” the comments. If you don’t mind liking the comments you did read, it would be great so we all know we’re on the same page. The reason I’m saying that is because many of us recommended that you ask your vet for an anti nausea and you haven’t mentioned it all. If Fizgig is nauseated you’ll have a hard time getting him to eat, even with the apetite stimulant. Nausea trumps apetite. And with an anti nausea, you may not have to syringe feed him which will be a lot less stressful on both of you. Can you please reply and let us know if you did that and what the vet said?

And just to confirm, you’re not home testing right?

Yes, Fizgig had a nauseous shot of Cerenia both times he went to the vet during the day. Yes Fizgig is on an appetite stimulant but I have not used it since Wednesday.
As of today Fizgig is eating on his own plenty of food to get his insulin. He is now acting like himself, jumping up and doing great. He’s back to yowling and his tail is held high. I posted earlier a thank you and update, My apologies I figured my post update would fill you in on where we are and I didn’t need to get too specific since He’s stable and not in a crisis. Next time I’ll acknowledge each post as I read.

He runs after eating small amounts out of fear I’m going to do something like stick him with needles or shove food down his throat. Once he’s a little more comfortable I’ll start using the meter.

I’m very happy he’s doing better, that’s great news and thank you for the updates! But you got a lot of people replying and in the middle of a crisis it’s hard to know if you read it all.

The Cerenia shot is something he needs to get at the vet. What we’re saying is that you should have anti nausea meds at home you can give him in an emergency or if he doesn’t wan to eat again. Cerenia comes in pill format and ondansetron is the other option. Please ask your vet about it and get a prescription filled. The shot only lasts for 48 hours and then, as we’ve been saying, the apetite stimulant alone won’t do it. Does that make sense? I keep going back to this because I want to make sure you understand. You need to have anti nausea at home or you’ll find yourself running back to the vet all the time for the Cerenia shots and there’s no need. Trust me, I’ve been there.

Also just know that the alphatrack has the most expensive strips $1 each. I go through 50 in less than 2 weeks so you do the math. I’d see if you can send it back and get a ReliOn at Walmart. You can go in and buy it since you’re not starting testing right anyway and no need to wait for shipping.
 
Hello again, I appreciate everyone’s concerns. As I mentioned I did purchase 300 strips and 300 lancets with my alphatrak. I know the price, I still purchased it. I may switch to a cheaper one at a later date I have already researched the relion which will likely be my choice BUT that is a month or 2 out.

2. I also know it comes in pill form for the cerenia and I asked about the other. Working with my vet that has known my cat since he was 10weeks old I opted to get the shot daily if necessary at $24 a shot as he will be going for weight checks. (He gets free vet visits on the wellness plan which he’s been on since I picked him up from the shelter at 10weeks). I trust my vet I just don’t believe “Vets” in general know all there is to know about things which is why I started researching. I’m already beating myself up for not researching sooner how critical it can get and how fast. I have a nutritionist for my dog as vets know nothing about nutrition for your pets.

Fizgig is now eating full cans on his own and getting his full unit of insulin (prozinc) twice a day. (Granted it’s only been 3 days but its going very well). He’s jumping up in my lap asking for pets and his sides are not so sunken in. Which is why I have not needed the shot OR the appetite stimulant.

Again, I’ve read each and every message here as well as other threads. I will try to like each post after I read it so you know I read it. Thanks again everyone for the great advice.
 
I saw a nutritionist for Minnie too. Human doctors know very little about nutrition so vets are even worse.

it all sounds great. I’m glad you’re researching. I did the same for Minnie. They’re like children and you have to know everything there’s to know about their disease and advocate for them.

hope our Fizgig continues to do well. He’s a looker :cat:
