We just incre3ased Gideon to 2 units BID yesterday morning from 1.5 units. We are feeding him now and then will retest, and shoot if he is 100+. That is my number for shooting. Any advice?

Glad to see you increased. No tests last night?

A couple of things come to mind. When you get a low number like this you need to HOLD, no food, and re-test again in 20 minutes. Yes, I know that's a tough one because kitty wants his breakfast! But what you're trying to determine is if this is a number on the upswing (meaning has he already been lower or higher) OR is it on the downswing.

Now that food has been introduced the next number will most likely be higher because it's food induced. So it's going to be difficult to say. A 79 is a safe number to shoot IF you're going to be there to monitor and IF you have your hypo kit ready (medium and high carb food, karo syrup) in case he really starts to drop low.

So the first question is why no tests last night - especially after an increase - those night time numbers are critical.

The PMPS last night was 421. I had not recorded it yet. He is now 86. He ate his normal food, not high carb. We should give insulin?

That’s a nice food bump. He will either start to come down or bounce from that huge drop. Get a +2. Last night you should have gotten a +2 or +3 and if there was a drop left food out to slow him down. He does seem to get too good a response to increases at first that has made reductions necessary. Feeding the curve might be able to prevent that and keep him in healing numbers and prevent big bounces.

Gideon's +3 last night was 421. I usually record it in the morning, but was so concerned about his GREEN number, I forgot. He had food to eat last night, though he sleeps, like all the other cats. They seem to eat around 9p-10p, then when we go to bed, they do too. I will test again at +4. Thank you Elise and Sue for helping us muddle our way through this, and get our boy consistently in a good range and on the correct dose.

You will get there. I’m glad you didn’t skip this morning. It’s scary shooting low but often it leads to a nice flat cycle. Let’s see what he does after the expected food bump. Will he stay in better numbers or bounce? Only he has the answer.

OK. So I fixed the numbers on Gideon's spreadsheet for today. I had the +3 number recorded in the +2 spot.

AMPS = 79, fed normal and gave Lantus 2 units.
+1 = 135
+3 = 186
+5 = 249

Thanks for going on this journey with us!

Ok. No tests until PMPS. I sure hope I do not see BLACK at that time, but I wouldn't be surprised based on his history.

Not bad though! I'm glad he came back up...although now he's making a big deal out of it by bouncing...but that's normal. Over time those bounces will become less dramatic - at least that's the hope. Great job shooting this morning! I know that takes guts! But you were prepared...next time, just hold off on the food, get another test and see which way the numbers are going. We all have been there, done this...and learned the same lesson. I did exactly the same thing first time I saw green in the AM...and then someone was nice enough to tell me what I should have done...and would do next time. Just part of the marathon of this disease :)

I don't know the backstory here so forgive me if I'm missing something :) Shouldn't Gideon have been increased to 1.75 instead of 2 (up from 1.5 units)?

Karen is correct, and what she notes is exactly what we went by. I too would normally have gone to 1.75 units, but we had collected enough history to know that going right to 2 units was what we should do. This is not to say if we had chosen to go to 1.75 units it would have been wrong.

I don't see that +3 on the spreadsheet, but if it's possible to get another test tonight, it would be good to know if he kept on dropping.

It is not on the spreadsheet because my husband took it before he went to bed. I am at work. I was thinking of waking my husband up to have him test Gideon at 2AM, but I did not. I hope my boy is ok. I wonder if he had dropped lower Thursday night, and then was coming up when we tested at 7AM. No way to tell since I fed him and then gave the Lantus. I will post again, and update the spreadsheet after I get home at 0700. Thanks.
