Well, the beautiful blue streak of yesterday was broken last night with yellow and this morning his number is in the 300s again.

He had diarrhea yesterday --the same light-colored diarrhea he had when he was so sick with pancreatitis. His appetite yesterday wasn't great. Overnight he had diarrhea too, but it was a tiny bit formed. Since he had the diarrhea yesterday, I've been giving S. boul. This morning his appetite was wonderful again.
Insights on what is going on and what to do about it would be appreciated.

I also have a question about Maxi's brother Rudi for you cat health experts:

For the last few weeks, I have noticed that sometimes (maybe 1 out of 5 times) Rudi struggles a little to evacuate his bowel. This morning he was in the box pushing, and when he left the box, the only result was 2 garbanzo-size pieces. They were not hard or dry. The other times when he seemed to struggle a little to poo, he was able to have a nice b.m. (He always gets a good amount of water mixed with his food, and he eats only canned.)
Also, for the last couple months, Rudi sometimes (maybe once a week) spits up - just clear spit. He otherwise seems very well and has good appetite. His BG is normal.
I would like to take him for an ultrasound and x-ray of his belly and a blood test, but I am already in the hole from Maxi's and Lolo's vet bills.
Please advise.

Thank you.

@Wendy&Neko @Marje and Gracie

PS: Can you believe how cute and sweet these brothers are together? They love each other so much. (This photo was taken this morning.)

Love the picture. They're so adorable together. It sounds like Rudi could have constipation. I hope you can figure out what is going on with him and Maxi. Sending prayers.

He's just so handsome, I love black kitties. I'm very new to this group, but I have a kitty with chronic colitis, and another with mega-colon, and canned pumpkin is a go to, for any kind of bowel issues; whether it's diarrhea or constipation, pumpkin can be a good start. Just 1 tsp mixed in the wet food, twice a day, not to much to start - and you have to make sure its pure pumpkin, nothing else added in. Just thought I'd throw that out there, as a thought :)

Has Rudi had bloodwork recently?

Do you give probiotics regularly to Maxi? S. Boullardi can be given as a maintenance dose. I didn’t give it, but a regular probiotic. I was also feeding raw which tends to be firmer poos, less diarrhea.
I will go a step further and recommend Jarrow’s S. boulardi with MOS. This site, while aimed at cats with IBD, has excellent info for cats, in general. I also feed raw but give both of my cats, both healthy, the Jarrow’s and the NOW Probiotic Defense. I also rotate the latter with a few other probiotics from time-to-time.

My boy recently had diarrhea from what the vet thought was pancreatitis (it wasn’t) but was most likely from his gut flora being upset by a topical ear med I was giving him that he ingested. The Jarrow’s got it under control and I’ve continued with it and started my little kitty girl with (normal poos) on it.

Thank you, 4cats. I have tried pumpkin in the past for a departed kitty who had constipation but couldn't get him to eat it (mixed with food). I will try it with Rudi.

Rudi has had bloodwork in the last 6 months

I've haven't been giving Maxi probiotic regularly. I'm not sure if the S. boul. helped him when he had diarrhea before because I treated him with it aggressively (per instructions) but his diarrhea lasted way longer than 48 hours.

Thanks

I will start all 3 boys on Jarrow’s S. boulardi with MOS.

Meepers is handsome too!

Some cats will eat baby food squash, it not pumpkin, so it can be an alternative. Neko loved pumpkin, came into the kitchen for her share when I was cooking with it.

If I can't get him to eat pumpkin, do you think squash is as effective?

Thanks

The regular S. boulardi also did not stop Tobey’s soft stools and I was following emergency stop procedures. It did move it from diarrhea every 30 mins to soft stools three times a day and I was also using slippery elm syrup. Once I started the S boulardi with MOS, it stopped immediately.

I know Wendy’s kitty has an issue with egg yolk powder but I really like it for motility (Foodfurlife has the best). Instead of pumpkin, I’d just give him some raw egg yolk. Don’t go overboard.....just 1/8 tsp and see how that does. You might have to bump it up a bit. For me, the egg yolk powder is easier to give and I don’t have to toss something I don’t use as it keeps in the frig although I give it twice a day to my cats for general health purposes. If you don’t want to try that, you might go small and use the Gerber’s non GMO baby food pumpkin as long as there is nothing else in it except, perhaps, water (I can’t see the ingredients). Keep in mind that pumpkin can also be used as fiber for diarrhea and, like any fiber, if there is not enough water with it, it can cause more constipation. It is a good prebiotic.

I like pumpkin patch-up for constipation, it helps with fiber, and also brings in more water, since its a puree (just pumpkin, and water), which helps as well. Sometimes a constipated kitty, is just dehydrated.
For diarrhea, i like a firmer pumpkin, like Kroger Simple Truth Organic Solid Packed Pure Pumpkin from Kroger (double check its the pumpkin only, not the mix).

You could start with watering down his wet food a bit just to see, if that helps loosen things up for him. That egg yolk idea is really good, and adds lots of vitamins, and probiotics are a staple for getting a tummy back on track. I'm not sure about squash, i've never tried it - you'd have to compare fiber and sugar content on that.

I just gave Rudi some egg yolk.

The Gerber is only pumpkin and water according to the list of ingredients, but it doesn't say what percentages.

Rudi does get quite a bit of water mixed with every meal.

What is the egg yolk powder issue, @Wendy&Neko , so I can know what to look out for?

Thank you!

Some cats are allergic to eggs.

Don’t give spinach to cats, one of your options was pumpkin and spinach.

I hope Rudi isn't allergic to eggs.

I didn't know that about spinach! I liked the pumpkin option with spinach because it's organic. No others were organic.

Lolo loves broccoli. I think it's ok to give it to him, but please confirm.

Thanks!

Spinach not for cats with CKD or urinary - I didn't know if he had those issues at all. I've never heard of broccoli being a problem, Neko liked raw beans.

@Wendy&Neko @Marje and Gracie

UPDATE re. below: He went back to the box, strained a little, and produced a nice poo. Thank goodness!

Marje, Rudi is by far the biggest boy of my 3, but he always has the smallest poos. Do you think I should give him 1/8 spoon of egg yolk once every day (or the powder and what dose do you suggest) always?
Thank you
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm now very worried about Rudi. He just tried to poo again to no avail.
He had the 1/8 teaspoon of egg yolk over 7 hours ago. He just ate a large amount of food with a tablespoon of half-and-half mixed in and lots of water. Should I give him more egg yolk? How much? Should I give him laxative? What kind and what dosage?
I want to get his bowels to move before it gets really bad. Please help me get his bowels to move.

He did pass gas so there is no intestinal blockage.

Thank you

I wouldn't do too much egg yolk to start. Does he seem dehydrated at all? Gums sticky? If you lift the scruff does it drop right away when you let go, or take it's time going down?

See post #4 for website to read.

No sticky gums. Scruff drops right away.
I read the website.

I agree with Wendy that you need to go easy on the egg yolk. The egg yolk powder dose is 1/4 tsp twice a day but you build up to it.
