Hi everyone

my cat is on insulin for two years now and she is well regulated , recently her back teeth gum was very red and inflamed which cause her pain when eating, vet says that she might need extraction for those back teeth and this is usually related to immune system that cause gum infection.

What i need to know if any one has experience with that, does diabetes effect immune system, is it the main cause for what happen to cats teeth??

i know that diabetic cat may need extraction in some stage but I need to know immune system is related with diabetes or it may be other reasons?

Thank you

Yes they are both more prone to infection and teeth tend to have issues. My cat needed a dental three years in a row, has had about 5 extractions, and she resorbed several teeth.
Today was he surgery, they had to remove 5 teeth , they vet suggested to use Metacam as they do not have any alternative Painkiller but i refused, can she recover without any pain killer?!

other thing, her blood test showed little raised in Bun and ciatenine which make the vet decided to put her on IV today and do the blood work again after 2 weeks.

3 months ago i did the early test for kidney failure that can catch any early sign, i forgot the test name but it came normal.

can these slight elevate in cratinine and Bun a sign for CKD , phosphorous is normal?

She may have just been a little dehydrated too if she wasn't eating well because of the teeth. See what it says in two weeks. If she seems to be in pain maybe ask for a couple of gabapentin. I only gave my cat pain killers for maybe a day or two after the extractions. I think the teeth hurt worse then the extractions did, ya know?

Yes I am also think that she is going to be fine without painkiller.

She could be having some extra pain because of the work done, when they perform extractions the toot does not necessarily come out easy so I do think it could be good for her if you give her some pain killers and inflammatory meds but I wouldn't do it for more than a couple of days
They only have Metacam and the ver suggested to lower the does if i am bot comfortable to use it , but after what i read about it i really prefer not to give her, she is already very old and i am afraid bout her kidney as i read it can cause CKD.

Have you checked if they have bupe?

On a positive note my Dre has been diabetic since he was almost 17 and is now 21-he has had 1 dental in the first year he was DX and he had no extractions and no dentals since. It may just be his genetics but hopefully you won't need anymore. I was so afraid when he went in for it ugh prayers :bighug:

Hi everyone,

today i brought Meme from the clinic , everything was fine and she ate well, i do not think that she is in much pain.

she was staying there since 7 am yesterday, i just tested her blood sugar and it is just 84 which was surprised, they did not gave her any insulin.

should i give her regular dose or wait , she might not need it any more??!!!
