Hello,
This is the belated introduction post. I am having a dosing issue and posted that before I had a chance to post this, so apologies for going about things backwards. Anyway, one of my fur babies, Mopem, a ten year old, formerly feral, gray and white tabby was just diagnosed 2 days ago as diabetic. We have been plunged into a world of too much and not enough information all at the same time. Plus, due to covid19 I'm currently stuck with a basically absent vet who isn't too competent at the best of times. I am so thankful to each and every one of you who are on this board; the stress and anxiety are out of control and that is not helpful for Mopem. I have tried to set everything up the way it is requested, so if something is not right, please let me know so I can fix it. I seem to be having issues with people not seeing an updated spreadsheet view for some reason, but I posted that as a question on the tech help thread. Thanks again to all of you for being here!

thank you for being so proactive and setting up your signature and ss and even posting in the right forums! Gold stars for you!!

I have a questions, especially since you already shared your vet may not be the most competent. Why Vetsulin? I’d suggest considering a better insulin for cats since you just now are getting started. Vetsulin is also called caninsulin for canine insulin and is not the most optimal for cats who have a higher metabolism than dogs.

My two cents for now and welcome again!

Hi and thanks for replying. I guess Vetsulin since that is what the vet gave me. I have done some research on this forum and have asked about Prozinc but have not gotten a response back from the vet who is mia for the weekend. Thanks again!

I feel that a lot of vets who have more experience with dogs than cats will prescribe that. I asked because sometime it’s a financial decision since it’s so much more affordable. I’m a big fan of Lantus so you might want to ask about that as well. It’s expensive in the US but most of us get our supply from Mark’s Pharmacy in Canada and it’s 1/3 of the cost.

be aware that Vetsulin sets in very quickly and it’s important to make sure your cat has eaten before shooting the insulin. With the other 2 the onset is slower so you have a good 2 hours before it hits

Stay away from Novolin please. Its not too much to ask I think prozync works best with U40 syringes but I use Lantus and I have the 1-2 mark ones. I get the ReliOn from Walmart. 100 for $17.99. The tip is super short. I believe syringes with .25 marks don’t exist, but if you find any let me know!

ProZinc is available as a vial, so as long as the needle is long enough to puncture, it should work (it's a U40 insulin)

One thing to keep in mind, as I understand it (new here), you only have about 15 minutes of leeway in dosing schedule with Lantus. So if you gave at 8am, you have to give next one at 745-815p. For my schedule, that's too narrow a range...especially if you have to stall, then it takes you a few days to get back on schedule. ProZinc is a out an hour leeway, and would've been my next move if the Vetsulin wasn't working for us (seems like I'm one of the oddballs where it's working).
