06/12 Kitten AMPS/135 +3/158 +6/247 vaca question

Today’s some good numbers compared to a few days ago!
I have a question about vacation, anyone able to help Or offer some advice? It’s on yesterday’s post

will post +6 BG soon

We take Molly camping with us she loves it! But we have a pet sitter that will come in and test Molly, if we're not camping. She has had a diabetic cat previously. She would test Molly and text me her numbers. If I thought they were too low I would tell her to skip. She left out lots of food for her. We bought timer dishes and I would check in on Molly with the camera we have set up.

Sometimes you can find a local vet tech or assistant willing to earn a little extra on the side and come in and give shots. Or they may know someone at the vet clinic - my clinic has ads for sitters. I am lucky that my current sitter has given insulin before, should I ever need that skill again.

Or you could have your friend come in and practice once or twice. I would lower the dose a bit while you are gone, cause you won't get testing. Plus it's easier if the insulin dose is on a line.

It’s looking like I may have found a vet tech interested! Thanks for the info!

I think I’ll reduce the dose even with the VT as she will only be getting AM/PM #s and I don’t want to risk a low while no one is around. How much do I reduce the dose while away? And do I start reducing the dose a day or two before I leave? Kitten is currently on 2.75 units. Lastly when I return do I just go straight back to 2.75 units? Thanks again!

That's great you may have found someone to help out!

I would reduce to at least 2.5 units - leave a sample syringe willed with coloured liquid to show the dose size. Yes, even for a vet tech. I had one vet tell a story about a former vet tech who showed a client 20 units instead of 2 on a syringe.

If you reduce for a day or two before hand, you can see what that dose will do. I would want her to be seeing at most the odd upper green. Hopefully you have an autofeeder or a way to provide food during the cycle. And yes, when you are back - go back to 2.75 units.

Thank you for the details! I will do that. Yes I have the auto feeder. I’m going to order a few extra inserts (hopefully they arrive in time) and have the food ready in the fridge so she just needs to reload it (vs sorting out my portion sizes).
