Do you BG test before every shot, indefinitely?

Just wondering - Mocha is starting to act a lot more normal now that he’s settled in but I had to order more strips so there was a day or two I made sure he ate and then shot 1Unit Lantus.

i finally got the strips back and he was 118 tonight right after he ate (like directly after). Does Lantus stay i. System for 12 hours because it had only been 11, so my question is, do I skip the shot altogether and just test again in an hour? I don’t want to give him a shot at like 11pm and then change the schedule to 11/11.

also do you always test Before Indefinitely? I have to go out of town for about 4 days next week and I have a vet tech I know I’m paying to come over feed him and do a shot should I ask her to check his BG before each shot?

apologies I haven’t updated my chart yet.

I see you had already fed Mocha. The routine is Test, then feed then shoot in that order.
If the BG is too low, then you don’t feed, you stall and retest in 20 minutes.

As you don’t have a spreadsheet I can’t advise you except to say I think you would be better to skip as you have already fed and any BG would now be food influenced..and you don’t want to get off schedule.
Please get you spreadsheet and signature done so we can help you.

Yes you need to test indefinitely preshot to keep Mocha safe. Today is the perfect example why.
Are you testing during the cycles to see how low he is going?. Lantus dosing is based on the lowest point in the cycle.

If you are getting someone in to test and give the insulin to Mocha for a few days YES ask them to test before every shot. Have a ‘no shot number‘ which she won’t give the insulin if it is below that. I would suggest 200 as I haven’t seen any data yet.
And I would reduce the dose as there will be no one there to monitor him. Do you think she could draw up 3/4 unit (0.75). If you think that would be a problem I would reduce it to 1/2 unit (0.5 units) while you are away.
Ask her to definitely leave food out for him as well when she leaves each time.
Is there any history of ketones?
