Feedback on an app I'm developing

Hi,

This is my first post here. I just wanted to get the bad news out of the way first, and say that my cat has unfortunately passed away.

For the last couple years of his life, he was diabetic. He would seesaw in and out of remission at times, and required constant measurement and tweaking of his insulin dose. We would measure him between twice and several times a day, usually giving two insulin doses a day, but that also changed erratically depending on his condition.

To track all of this, my partner and I ended up using a simple shared spreadsheet, but not the template you use at FDMB. The spreadsheet was OK, but because we were updating it so frequently, I always wished there was a faster way. I tried various iPhone apps on the App Store, but most of them were made for human patients, were expensive, or clunky to use.

So, I set out to make my own app. The idea was something fast and simple that required just a couple of taps to add an entry in seconds. Sadly, I didn’t finish the app before my cat died. But I’ve kept working on it in the hope it could be useful to others. That’s why I wanted to show it to this community. I’d really appreciate your feedback on what I have so far in the screenshots below, and whether you’d be interested to try it when it’s ready.

Just to let you know, the app will require an iPhone or iPad running iOS 13. I’m sorry that it won't be available on Android or PC, but a Mac version is a possibility.

Current features:
  • Add entries for blood glucose, insulin dose, food, and/or notes
  • Search entries
  • Support for multiple measurement units
  • Support for one pet only
  • Support for one device only
Planned features:
  • Support for multiple pets
  • Sync across all of your devices
  • Sync across others’ devices (e.g. family members)
  • Export data as a spreadsheet
Questions for you:
  1. Are you interested in an app like this?
  2. What features or changes would it need for you to want to use it?
  3. If/when a public beta is ready, would you like an invitation to try it?
  4. Any other comments / suggestions?

Thanks so much for your time.

They should hopefully be visible now if you reload the thread?

Yep, that fixed it!

The biggest problem I can think of in regards to this board is that it's only available on the iPhone/Mac. One of the strengths of this board is in our color coded spreadsheet that will work on any platform.

Have you looked at the app designed by the RVC in London?

Look for "RVC Pet Diabetes App" and it's available in the App Store and Google Playstore. Might give you some idea's

Thank you. </3

I agree, I only have Android/PC else I would have loved to try it out for kicks. Exporting data will make a really nice feature. I really like that there is a food amount entry as well.
The only thing I can think of that I would want would be a visual graph - either able to be looked at by day or past week etc. Would be cool to see daily tests put together to form a curve!
It's also a very clean-looking app, I like that. Originally I tried looking for apps to keep in my phone before I used the spreadsheet here and everything either had too many options to sort through or I couldn't get a basic look at day-to-day numbers.

Thanks for that feedback. Yep, I've used the RVC app. It's very comprehensive and works everywhere, which is definitely something my app lacks. But, I actually found it more time consuming to use than a spreadsheet for what we needed it for, and it couldn't be shared between me and my partner.

For many users of this board, the spreadsheet will be a better solution because it works on any platform and can be shared easily. I appreciate your input.

A customisable chart/graph widget is a great idea, and is something I'm planning to have at the top of the History screen (which is not shown in these screenshots).

I'm an iOS designer/developer by trade. I wish I had the time and resources to make an Android app too. It doesn't feel good excluding people.

Thanks so much for saying it's clean-looking, though. That was a primary design goal and I had the same experience as you wading through the existing apps. :)

Thanks for your efforts and it looks interesting but our needs here are very different. The SS we have was developed so we can link it to a specific member and everyone can view it.

Thank you and best of luck.

I may be partial because I’m an iPhone user, but I’d love an app on my phone. I’m mainly always here via cell phone so it would work perfectly for me. I agree it’s very clean looking and I love the idea of the curve graph, especially when we actually do a full curve. I guess the problem would be sharing with the entire community so it would have to work on any phone. Could this work like a Nextdoor app for instance? A community app where everyone is connected so we could access each other’s ss that way?

Thank you both. It's clear that having the spreadsheet linked to a member and viewed by everyone in the community is integral to FDMB, and I appreciate that feedback.
