Bring Coltrane to a new vet tomorrow and will be advocating for a long-lasting insulin. Looked up Lantus on Chewy and cringed at the price. Does anyone have an tips for where it's least expensive, both in the US and Canada?

Thank you to everyone who has responded to my questions. You've all been so kind and generous and I've been learning a lot.

My Vet called in Lantus to a human Pharmacy. I have the Lantus pen it was $62 dollars but it last for 300 shots . The needles were $55 dollars but I would just get the syringe which is cheaper and better if you have to increase or decrease the dose . Kim how is Coltrane doing ? Roe

Thanks Roe. $62 isn't bad. It looked like it was $300 on chewy, but I don't know how much that be in terms of number of shots. Hopefully more than a month? Coltrane is okay. I've been trying to desensitize him to me touching his ears in preparation for trying to test his BG. Going to start some of the other suggestions like exposing him to the equipment, etc.. paired with treats. And doing a consult with a new vet tomorrow :-)

Kim if you are in the US I got the pen at CVS pharmacy . I’m so Glad to hear you are trying a new Vet , I’m sorry but his prices are Insane . I haven’t home tested as of yet because my Vet is doing a 14 day curve with the Libre which is attached to Dusty for now . Let us know how it goes tomorrow

I second and third Mark’s pharmacy in Canada. They ship it to you with ice packs and all. You get a 5 pen pack for about $189 with shipping included. That’s like less than $40 per pen. You won’t find a better deal. And order before the summer because shipping then is not advised with the hot temperatures and all.

you can get the prescription from your vet and email it to them

Hi Kimberly I would go to the supply closet here and buy the 3 lantus pens from Panic
For 3 pens that she is selling for 50 dollars is a great deal and the expiration date is good. That means as long as you don't use the other 2 pens they are good until the expiration date, keep them all in the fridge. Depending on the dose you will be givung they can still be potent for 4 months, Don't shoot using the pen, go out and buy U-100 syringes with half unit marking's, make sure they say that. When using the syringes we usually increase or decrease by 0.25 units,
I know Walmart sells the Relion syringes but if you go there make sure you look at the box and they say half unit markings on it, you I'll also need to buy lancets 26 or 28 gughe to start with
You can order from ADW Diabetes buy with this virus they will take longer for you to get them

They're also available at WalMart if you have one near you. Their Relion brand 3/10ml, 30 or 31 gauge, 6mm or 8mm insulin syringes all come with half unit markings and are only $12.58 for a box of 100 (although a lot of them don't realize they DO come with half unit markings!)

Red may correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the vials aren't any good after 3-4 months of being opened. They hold about 1000 units so it's a LOT of wasted insulin.
The pens are 300 units, they're act like "mini vials" and the nice thing about them is since they're individual, the clock doesn't start ticking on them until they're opened. So one pen may also last 3+ months, but you have four more unopened "vials". So technically a 5-pack of pens could last 12-24 months, whereas a single vial will only last 3-4.

It's the top one that you would want to order. The cartridge only allows unit dosing. No fine tuning such as is needed for a cat.

Hi Kel I am confused by what you said about the first one by saying its the top one she wants to buy , the cartridge only allows unit dosing. I have the pens so if you might drop it it won't break @Red & Rover (GA)
It seems the information I gave you is wrong. It's been awhile since I've had to buy insulin. My apologies. And thanks @Panic and @Diane Tyler's Mom for the catch.

Update: Saw the new Vet today, and he prescribed Lantus 1 mg bid to start. I'd like to buy from Mark's in Canada. Has anyone had any trouble with the insulin being spoiled or anything like that? Thank you, Kim
We go by units so 1 unit and yay congrats!!! :bighug:

not that I know of. I think everyone here is pretty happy with Mark. If you worry about the shipping time they offer extra insulation for an additional $10-15 I think. I got mine and it was still chill inside even after spending the weekend in the post office. They also add one of those chip thermometers ao you can check what it says when you get the package. I’d check the weather in your area to make sure it’s not going to be super hot when it’s on it’s way to you. If you’re getting the 5 pens which is the best deal, the prescription from your vet will have to be for 5 I think. But you can call and talk to them and they’re great about answering all our questions and super helpful too! :)

The last time I bought from Mark's it took a while to get to me, they told me to allow at least a month, in the past it was much faster. I think buying from Panic's Mom is a better deal and you could get these right away, also your Kitty needs the insulin right away. If you have insulin on hand then you can wait on Mark's.

I've gotten a few messages already for my pens but there are always new posts in the Supply Closet, with the virus going on and backing up Marks it may be faster to go there until it all blows over.

It would be faster to get from you and you are offering a better price. And most important, you were the bean to a sugar baby, which most of us own or have owned.
