Hello-
Maxi is at the clinic now. His appointment was so they could do a glucose curve. I agreed with the plan of letting it play out this long -I mean letting the vet have her way until now- and then putting my foot down about doing TR.
But because he still has diarrhea and (as of last night) and now because something is up with his appetite again, I have asked the vet to consider SIBO and what to do about it (thanks to @Marje and Gracie).
He was eating great for several days, but on May 10, in the evening, I noticed that he didn't want the last bite of his food, but he seemed to want something (to eat). On May 11, he ate well in the morning and afternoon, but in the evening he ate all his food but not with his usual gusto. (That could be attributed to the fact that I gave him a food he doesn't particularly like (a food that has nice low carbs and phosphorus that I try to get him to eat when I can). later that night he ate well again. Yesterday, May 12, a slight pickiness about food seemed present. This morning, I gave him a food that he's been glad to eat, and he dug in, but then looked around, I encouraged him to eat, he looked around, I encouraged him to eat, and we went through that routine until he finished.
His last 12mg dose of Cerenia was May 9. He had 8 mg of Cerenia on May 10. On May 11, I mistakenly gave him Cerenia twice, once in the am and once in the pm, each time 8mg. Yesterday, May 12, he got 8 mg of Cerenia in the pm.
His last 2mg dose of Ondansetron was May 10 in the am; in the pm he got 1 mg of Ondansetron. On May 11 in the am and pm he got 1 mg of Ondansetron. His last dose of Ondansetron was the May 11 pm dose.
He seemed to be doing really great, appetite-wise, and I thought I was safely weaning him off Cerenia and Ondansetron. Do you think I should have kept giving it? (I guess now with hindsight the answer to that is yes.) Please advise on what to do about these meds. It seems that the horrible inappetance that he had before started gradually like this, and I'm very scared that he will get really sick again.
Should I continue Cerenia and Ondansetron indefinitely? @Marje and Gracie @Wendy&Neko
In addition, I'm worried about the continued diarrhea. he has not had a normal bowel movement since coming home from the hospital. His last b.m. was last night (diarrhea).
His last dose of Clavamox was Monday (May 11) am, and I am hoping it was the Clavamox that made the diarrhea persist, and that the Clavamox was still in his system until last night, and that's why he still had diarrhea last night. Keep in mind that the clinic said he had no diarrhea while he was in the hospital and he had 2 normal bowel movements.
I have asked the vet about his diarrhea, told them about the returned food pickiness, asked about the high folate and SIBO.
I hope you can help me figure this out and get Maxi better. I'm very worried. I don't feel I can handle another episode like the one he just came out of, and I definitely do not want Maxi to go through that again. I don't want him to spend more time in the hospital. It's so scary for him. Nor can I afford it. I have to cash out retirement stuff to pay for last week's hospitalization.
Thank you very much
