I will say though that being asleep will make no difference to the BG levels.
An 87 a couple of hours after the dose of Lantus is quite low. Do you know what the preshot number was.?.
I would give him a snack of low carb food is and retest in an hour to see it’s not still dropping.
What dose of Lantus is he on?

I just reread some of the posts and see he is on 1 unit twice a day.
It is great you have decided to home test and are already doing it! This is the very best way to keep Pepper safe.
Just a few questions if you don’t mind.:)
What food are you feeding?
And are you feeding during the day and evening as well as before the peshot?
How is his appetite?
Do you have some high carb food and honey or karo in the house in case Pepper drops really low?

Hi Bron and Sheba,
I’m feeding Pepper mostly fancy feast pate. He was eating the fancy feast varieties with gravy before his diagnosis, but I learned the pate is lower in carbs. He eats approximately a can and a half (3 oz cans) right before his injections at around 9 am and again at 9 pm. He has a healthy appetite and will eat another can or so in between his twice daily injections. I’ve been giving him small amounts of chicken breast as well. I do have some cans of fancy feast in gravy which I believe are higher in carbs and I have dry Royal Canin Rx gastrointestinal food that a vet prescribed and I’m pretty confident he’d eat that. I haven’t given him any dry food in over a month but he was crazy for the Royal Canin that the vet prescribed when Pepper was constipated a couple of years ago. I keep it around just in case he ever has that problem again. I have local, raw honey and organic maple syrup, but no karo. I haven’t started home testing yet. He had a Libre disk on his neck/ back up until this morning. I’ve been using a scanner to check his BG for the past 14 days but now I don’t have any way to test. I plan on going to Walmart tomorrow to purchase the meter, strips and lancets. Thank you for your interest and assistance.

Raw honey is fine. There is no need to get karo as well.
If you would like help with setting up the SS just ask and I will ask my friend @Chris & China (GA) to help you. She is a whizz at doing them.
I noticed you said he is a big cat and keeps you awake at night asking for food.
Have you thought about an automatic feeder that will open automatically at set times. I used one for Sheba and it was jut great. That will save you being woken up and keep him happy. Giving him some chicken breast as well is fine and is a good low carb rest as well. As long as it isn’t more than about 10 or 15% of the food that is ok. If you gave too much moe it would throw out the calcium/ phosphorus ratios.

The pet meter that vets want their clients to buy do cost around $100 for 100 test strips for the Alphatrak. Some places, the cost has even been quoted as being $200 for 100 tests strips for the Alphatrak.

So go with the Relion Prime meter. $9 for the meter itself, box of 100 matching Prime test strips will cost you $17.88 and a box of lancets are a few dollars.

Thank you, Bron. I thought of using an automatic feeder, but figured they were only made for dry food. I’ll go check them out. : )

All the pictures show dry food in them, but you can put whatever food you want in them. The tray comes out to be washed. Some people will add an ice cube to the food in the later slots to help keep the food cool (and it also adds extra water to the food which is always good) or you can make "food-cicles" by mixing water with canned food and freezing it in an ice cube tray. Pop them into the slot and by the time the feeder rotates to that slot, it should be thawed and offer a "fresh" meal.
