I’m trying to be gentle and I am trying to even go for the scruff. I filled the syringe and capped it and set it aside. Patiently waiting for her to eat while trying to pet her some and feel out her mood and....

When I pull her skin up anywhere I get an immediate snarl. Sides or scruff, it doesn’t matter. I can pet her and she mostly won’t react, but when I start to tent she swipes and snarls. She backs away from her food.

I cannot delay her shots while she is running so high. I can traumatize her more by having some help holding her, but it also scares the helper to try because she is definitely angry about anything related to her shots. She tolerates the ear poking more but even that lately I just feel like she is so fed up with.

I wish cats could get insulin pumps like humans do. Or something. :(
 
So it’s when I pull the skin up that she hisses and snarls. I tried to shoot with less tenting this time. Is this more likely to go into muscle or cause other issues if I tent less? Sigh. Perhaps I need to review my techniques. I know there’s a rolling technique too but I don’t think it will make a difference in her response.

My boy Moe has super sensitive skin and hates when I try to tent it for his shot. I can’t remember where I saw it, but someone recommended rolling the skin up rather than pinching it. What I do is place my hand on his side or scruff like I’m going to pet him. I use my thumb to part his fur, very gently grasping the fur between my thumb and the the side of my index finger. Then I roll my hand back so that the skin comes up and inject into spot where the fur has parted. I do have to be careful to angle the needle down so I don’t poke through and get a fur shot. I think because it’s a larger area of skin being lifted instead of a smaller pinch, it doesn’t distress him as much. I also give the injection while he’s busy eating, so he’s less likely to want to move away. He still twitches, but doesn’t get angry or run away from me.
 
I don't tent. I just shoot straight in the sides. Since Alice doesn't mind the ear pokes maybe not tenting would work.
 
She does seem to be having a decent night though. At least she is sleeping next to me. When she feels worse she sleeps away more, and we spooned every night for about a decade, prior to much of this. Not so much these days.

I was updating her signature details and I realized how long now we’ve been really struggling to get her care worked out, and of all things I do feel a bit silly that getting her shots in is what I am having trouble with now! It used to be something I would have never imagined being able to do and then it became something I did with so little thought and with such great ease. I suppose this struggle, too, will be behind us eventually.

I used the same technique as Carla does. Shoot parallel to the skin so as to avoid shooting into muscle.

What length? I have been using 8mm.

Flank is further down towards the hips than the sides as I have been doing, yeah? I know somewhere there is a chart for this. I’ve provided it for other people before but I don’t presently remember where it is. But I also wondered about differences in absorption.

This is closer to what I did today actually and she had no reaction to me doing it! Hope it all worked out.


My other worry is always that I have a diofficult time on small doses of Lantus being as sure about if I got it in versus on larger doses of NPH where I knew when I missed. I know what Lantus smells like, of course, but there’s always a little bit of that smell around, I feel like. Or maybe my sense of smell isn’t all that precise. :p

Thanks everyone. It was a better morning. I think it also helped that she was under renal threshold. She looked well this AM even with my late shoot.
