How often should I test?

Hey all, thanks for the warm welcome from my previous post!

The pharmacy just delivered the glucometer and everything needed to go with it, so I can start testing Jade right away.

Are there certain times that are better to test then others? How many tests should I do daily and how often between tests should I be waiting? Does it all depend on her readings? Can’t wait to get started. Thanks in advance!

Also what meter are you using human or pet

It's up to you when you want to start testing
Example 8 am and 8 pm
After testing the AMPS (am pre shot) test, feed ,shoot
Most of us test 2-3 times a say during each cycle to see how low the insulin is dropping her BG
You can start with a +2, a+4 and a +6
Then the next day @+3, a+5, @+7
Same thing with PMPS
It's important to text at night because a lot of kitties go low at night
Just try to test at different times, like filling in a puzzle

The more data you have the better we can help you if needed
Just don't feed anything 2 hours prior to testing the pre shot
Glad you are excited to start home testing

Hey there! Sorry I thought I had set up everything. Will fix right now.

Jade is a grazer, she’s never eaten meals at certain times, so should I take her food away for 2 hours to make sure I can test? Or is a little food ok?

You mean don’t feed 2 hours prior to testing the preshots right? He can feed after that otherwise if he’s testing +2,+4 kitty will never eat ;)

Only 2 hours before the preshot test. After that it’s okay to eat. So if you’re going to give insulin at 8am no food after 6am then you test at 8, feed, then shoot. Same thing at night. No food after 6pm so you can give the shot at 8pm again you test, feed then shoot. It’s important to test before each shot on an empty stomach to make sure the BG level is high enough for the shot without the influence of food since food will raise the BG level. Makes sense?

Yup, makes sense. I’ll just take her food away 2 hours before I plan to test. Thanks!

EDIT: Also what do you mean that the blood glucose level is high enough for a shot? Does it have to be at a certain level to be able to give insulin? Because I’ve just been doing it every 12 hours before.

Hang on, @Diane Tyler's Mom who is our prozync expert? @Bron and Sheba (GA)
Yes, for me on Lantus for instance Minnie needs to be above 200. If she’s lower I can wait 20-30 minutes and retest to see if the BG is going up and it’s safe to shoot or down and then I can either give a token dose or skip. At this point, you’ll probably not see low numbers. But let us see what folks who deal with prozync say. I think it acts differently than Lantus

Thank you, man, what do I even go to the vet for? Says to watch the physical condition and if no change increase .5 units per week and inject every 12 hours. Says I need a $500 test weekly to monitor properly. That’s it, that’s all the info given to me. Had no idea about home testing or needing to be at a certain level of bg before giving a shot. What a joke. Oh well, in the right place now obviously!

If you want to trade nightmare stories I can create a thread just for that ha! So much I was told was wrong or just “incomplete information” and the worse part for me was watching Minnies neuropathy get to the point she couldn’t take more than a few steps at a time. You can only look forward and she’s still improving every day and she’s back to her normal self so you have most definitely found the right place my friend! :bighug:

Prozinc helper Deb here, not an "expert" by any means, but I have been helping a lot of folks using Prozinc over the last 4-5 months.;)

Hi Matt! Not many Prozinc users around, so your "stuck" with me instead.

Please read over the Sticky PROZINC DOSING METHODS first.
SLGS protocol is what most new members should start with.
Then ask any questions you may have.

p.s. Maybe I should play the "dumb blond" card, and not reply to any Prozinc users? @Aleluia Grugru & Minnie @Diane Tyler's Mom What do you think?

p.p.s. Bron will just tag me, since she doesn't understand Prozinc and has never used it for one of her cats. Quite frankly, I've never used Prozinc for one of my cats either.:cat:
