Hello-
Do you have any idea how to explain Maxi's continued/returned diarrhea?
I double-checked, and the vet assured me that maxi had one bowel movement the whole time he was there, the BM was Monday morning, and it was normal. But since Maxi came home Monday afternoon, he still has diarrhea, 3 times yesterday and once so far today. Before Maxi went into the hospital, his diarrhea was very light in color and very stinky. Yesterday's diarrhea was darker and thicker than before he went into the hospital and much less stinky. Today's diarrhea is lighter-colored again (not as stinky).
He has eaten only canned food at home. At the clinic he ate mostly dry food. I am thinking of introducing some dry food into Maxi's diet in an effort to stop the diarrhea.
Which is the least bad dry food?
(NB: The vet does not want freeze-dried raw; she says even freeze-dried raw has risk of salmonella.)

5:30am +8.5 from last night's shot: BG 288/ I found larger quantity of diarrhea in litter box, thicker, darker, much less smelly than before/6:15am: ate 2-3oz canned with gusto and all at once (no walking away)/ 8:50am: 2mg ondansetron/9:30am found diarrhea in litter box, sneezing/9:45am: clavamox 93.75mg, gabapentin 100mg, S.boul. 1/4 capsule, 15b probiotic 1/2 capsule, ate very well: 3-4oz with very good appetite/drinking more than normal, hiding on&off/3:15pm +5.5: BG 342, sneezed/3:30pm: ate 2-3oz canned very well, S.boul. 1/4 capsule, 15b probiotic 1/2 capsule/5:45pm: diarrhea (large-ish amount)/9:00pm: Cerenia 12mg, Clavamox 93.75mg, Ondansetron 2mg, Gabapentin 100mg/drinking/9:30pm: BG 388, ate well, 2.5 oz Weruva CatWok, 1/2 capsule probiotic, 1/4 capsule S.boul., drank/hid on&off throughout the day
Today:
4:30am: BG 349, ate 2oz Weruva CatWok very well with 1/4 cap. S.boul., drank/8:45am: 2mg Ondansetron, drank/9:30am: 93.75mg Clavamox, 100mg Gabapentin/9:40am: BG 408, ate well 3oz Weruva SteakFrites, 1/4 cap. S.Boul, 1/2 cap. probiotic/9:45: diarrhea -large-ish amount, lighter-colored & runnier than yesterday/10:00am 7 u Lantus/10:45 seems to feel quite well, came to me, looked sweetly up at me, came into my lap
 
FWIW- what they fed and what you feed is the difference for now. Maybe give just enough to get diarrhea to stop. Then once he is better can transition off it.
 
This food was recommended by a vet tech who knows diabetes and kidney disease. But what is the scary warning? I went to the website, but couldn't figure anything clear out. Is it about the chemicals in the plastic bag the food is in? Is the food safe? Should I throw this food away?

She was given it for a UTI back in September and within a couple days of starting she had pretty bad nausea, inappetence, and diarrhea. She'd never taken it and was fine except for the UTI before it, so we we pretty confident that it was the cause of her digestive issues. They were quite severe for 3-4 weeks, then the diarrhea lasted an additional month or two. We treated with S. Boulardii, pumpkin, pepcid, and a long term course of metronidazole. I added it to my signature mostly to keep it top of mind for myself to ask for an alternative if it's prescribed again! I kept forgetting the name.

I do want to say I don't feel comfortable suggesting it could be causing similar issues for Maxi, since he was having those problems before starting it. That is for those with more knowledge than I have to weigh in on.
 
What proteins are in the food that Maxi is eating now? Just wondering if a chicken or fish or other protein allergy is contributing to GI issues?

Is this the same vet that wants Maxi to have octreotide that has been proven not to work for acros? Just wondering. There are quite few pet food recalls for dry food too for salmonella, maybe even more than for raw food. Raw food is usually good for firming up stools. As for the Young Again, do be cautious, as it causes GI issues in some cats, not all. It very dense and rich, though don't know it that's what causes the issues. If you do try it, introduce it very slowly. I hate to suggest dry food, but Dr. Elsey's Clean Protein is an option I've heard some mention. The issue with it, is I think it's chicken so doesn't help if that's an allergy.

Are you giving the Clavamox(antibiotic) and the probiotics at least two hours apart? Sorry, find it hard to read all in one long sentence.

Mostly chicken. Some turkey, beef, lamb, duck.

Well, I'll stay away from it then.
 
Give the probiotics two hours apart from the antibiotics. Doesn't matter if it's before or after. As for Fortiflora, some people use it as an appetizer sprinkled on food. It's only a single strain so not great as a probiotic.

To deal with a protein allergy, you have to avoid it, but that means first finding out what they are allergic too. You can feed just one protein for a couple weeks and see how it goes, then slowly add a second protein. The slightly more complicated way is to eliminate proteins and see what the reaction is. I kept a "vomit log", where I tracked protein given and also any GI upsets that resulted. After a while I could see patterns.
 
Hi. I do t know where you live but if on the a West Coast U.S. I like Small Batch freeze dried raw. It’s on a lot of best food lists. Primal which I do still use has been removed from lists but I can’t find out why.

Sorry the diarrhea persists. I wonder if it’s the clavamox. How much longer will it be needed?

This is the only kind of Small Batch freeze dried I can find, but apparently it's not a nutritionally complete meal because it's to be used as a treat or sprinkled over a meal.

Is there a complete meal freeze dried by Small Batch?

There's still a week's worth of Clavamox left. We're supposed to use it all.

I guess they don’t make a freeze dried. Sorry. I do feed the frozen. I can’t find my 2020 list right now. I wish I knew why Primal is no longer recommended as they make a variety of freeze dried. I know Marje told me her friend’s cat vomited when eating it. Mine have been okay so far, anti-jinx, although I do feed mostly Small Batch frozen.
