Hi There,

I am new to this site! I feel relieved to have a place I can go to get some help!

I have a diabetic cat that has been on three different insuline's since Feb. It's been quite the whirlwind to get him regulated. Currently we have him on Lantus.

We are using a Hills M/D dry food 1/2 cup with a 1/4 cup of Instinct's original grain free pate Chicken. This was ordered from our vet, as we had tried a higher protein canned food before along with a raw chicken diet and his numbers seem to stay in the 500 range or higher. The amount of insuline has changed as well.He was on 6 units of Lantus which spiked his numbers over 750. So, we have backed down to the 1unit of Lantus and plan to check his blood sugar tomorrow.

Do you have recommendations for a low carb. high protein or high fiber wet food that seems to work for diabetic cats? Our cat has lost a lot of weight as well, so we are looking to bulk him up.

Thanks for your help.

Cindy

WELCOME TO FDMB! Glad you found us!
Many of us feed Fancy Feast pates. A lot of the varieties are 10% carbs. Heck I no longer have a diabetic kitty and STILL use the same food. Friskies also has a few varieties just think Pate!
There IS a food chart set up By Dr Lisa Pierson Its at the top of the thread list. Many choices there.
Lantus is a good choice for cats. We have many members using it.

I'm GLAD they started over with the units thats a dangerous amount of insulin. I think the use of dry food (diabetic or not) Is what kept your kitty from crashing.

Are you home testing? Its the best way for you to know just how that insulin is working. You may want to jump over to the lantus board and have a look around.
One thing you really should do is set up a profile and spreadsheet. You can find that here:
Suggestions, Tech Support & Testing Area
I know others will be chiming in to help you help your kitty

Again welcome to the best site on the planet to help you learn and understand everything about Feline Diabetes

Thank you so much. I have been narrowing down the food options from the chart provided above. Currently my cat Cannoli is still on dry and wet food combined, but I find it hard for him to eat the dry. I think because he isn't used to it! He's mostly been a wet food cat. Thank you for the suggestions. I will set up a profile. Thank you!

If you are testing I would ditch the dry completely. You MUST be home testing though. Removal of dry could plummet your cats bg's to a dangerous level.

Yes we are home testing. Do you recommend easing him off the dry slowly? I will talk to our vet as well to see what he recommends. Our cat isn't a fan of getting pricked in the ear! The other insulin he was on was Prozinc and NPH? I think that's the name.

Hi! Cannolilove PM'd me first, and I asked him/her to post in this forum for more eyes. Plus, responses need to be public and this way there'll be multiple answers to help sugardude Cannoli.

Would you share your mom/dad's first name with us Cannoli? Please?

Hi! My name is Cindy!

Yes ease him off slowly. The fact that you are home testing makes this so much more doable.

Hi Cindy! Nice to know your first name. So before you ease Cannoli too much onto wet food only, do get our standardized format spreadsheet up and running. Just in case his BG (blood glucose) numbers drop low and you need help in a hurry, having that SS up will really help us. It's a template you copy, so you do not need to "reinvent the wheel" and create your own version.
Also, do you have a hypo toolkit ready, and do you know the signs of hypoglycemia?
The following 2 links will help you there. Forgive the bit of melodrama in the first link, but hypo's can be dangerous.
We are familiar here with the lantus you are using for Cannoli now, plus the NPH and Prozinc insulins you used before. Plus several other insulins.
