Diabetes remission and bad hypo

Hi,

I need advice for my cat. He had diabetes 2 years ago and I stopped injecting Lantus after a remission caused by a new raw diet. He felt better, the curve was good.

Unfortunatly, i've noticed some bad behaviour : he's getting excited frequently, a reminder of his old diabetes habits. There's been a couple of times that he has really low number (50-55 mg/dl /3.1 mmo/L) and i'm really worried that I might cause hypos frequently.

Do you have any clue of what's happening ? I'm planning to do a whole day testing. I'm also confuse by the number because I use human strip with the alphatrak 2 machine.

Test : Using Alphatrak 2 with Freestyle Lite strip

Food (3,4x times a day) : https://www.mondou.com/en-CA/p-dog-and-cat-raw-foodturkey-salmon-and-lamb/1027325-MASTER/1027325

Thanks a lot. I'm so sad the problem is back.
I hope I didn't neglect my poor baby sugar.

Edit:

Insulin : None since 1 year +

Did you say you are using strips for a human meter in the Alpha Trak Meter, you can't do that. You should only be using the Alpha Trak test strips, each container of strips are coded for the Alpha Trak Pet Meter
You should not be using the Freestyle Lite strips either in the Alpha Trak Meter

I found this from the Aloha Trak this is what they had to say

You may be able to get FreeStyle - and other meter strips - to give you readings but the AlphaTRAK is not calibrated for those strips so accuracy is in question. With every production run of strips, we run calibration evaluations to identify which code will provide the best results for that lot of strips. These codes are then noted on the strip vial. With human strips, there are no such trials orMeter

Hi !

1. For the stripes, except for an huge case emergency, I won't be able to have new stripe or a machine. I've seen so many people use this system so maybe it's not that bad ?

2. I don't give insulin since 1 year +, I scan my cat sometimes, just to check if everything is fine. I'm not really informed about the subject, why those low numbers arent bad ?

Im going to check my cat insulin blood every 2hours and verify his blood sugar curve.

If you aren't giving insulin, those low numbers are perfectly safe. Looks like your kitty is in a very strong remission!

Is there anything else going on that makes you think he is ill? You said that he "gets excited" the way he did when insulin-dependent, what does that mean? Any other symptoms, like excessive eating and drinking, or weight loss? I am just wondering if maybe he should be brought to a vet to rule out any other problems (hyperthyroidism, kidney issues, etc.). If his only real "symptom" is the low blood glucose, though, you should be fine!

Hi ! So he's just strrrooongly ask for food. He doesn't have any other symptoms.
I didn't know those number were safe for a cat? I will read on the subject.
Thanks a lot! I adore my cat, he had so many health issue that I don't take any chance. I will see if I can see a vet for a routine verification.

Have your non-insulin dependent cat, currently in remission, checked for hyperthyroidism.

I adore my cat, he had so many health issue that I don't take any chance.
Then please use the right test strips for your meter.

No, do not use strips not made specifically for your meter in your meter. That is such a bad idea. There is even a post in Think Tank about that.

That is such a false economy. If you can't afford Alphatrak test strips, go buy yourself a Relion Prime meter which has very inexpensive test strips. Cheaper than the wrong strips you are using now, for the Alphatrak.

We have lot's of experience using human meters, such as the Relion Prime from Walmart for feline diabetes.

And those people are being penny wise and pound foolish in using "cheaper" test strips in an Alphatrak.
