Should I increase this Prozinc dose?

My cat's numbers are always high -- hardly ever under 200. She drops fast and even had a hypo if I follow the vet's advice and only feed her twice a day -- then she bounces way up again and stays over 500 for hours. I would like to increase her Prozinc from 1-1/2 units to 2 tomorrow morning and from 1 unit to 1 1/2 units in the evening and see if I can get these numbers down a little. My husband is home and can test and feed her all day long.

We feed her Sheba which has 3% carbs and sometimes Friskies which is 5%. My vet wants me to shoot her 1/2 hour before feeding her but I do not think that is good advice and I am going to try to find a new vet this week.

I would appreciate any help - I'm just sick about her being so sick all day long. She seems fine, but with these high numbers she must feel pretty crappy.

I’ll let others chime in about the dose, but I don’t agree with your vet when it comes to feeding only twice a day. Dogs do well with that but not cats. It’s good to give most of the food around shot times but I still give Minnie smaller amounts twice in between.

Also you should test, feed then shot. I’ve had more than one occasion where Minnie will refuse to eat and if I had already given her the shot that would be an issue. You feed first to make sure they have food in them so the insulin doesnt make their BG level drop too much as it would on an empty stomach.

If you feel you should look for another vet, I say go for it. I personally have been through a few and I say go with your instincts!!!

It's usually better to give the same dose both AM and PM, especially at first. Some cats can do better with a sliding scale, but most do better with consistent dosing.

How about trying 1.5 for both shots for a few cycles?

You're right that your vet isn't giving the best advice. We Test/Feed/Shoot, in that order and usually within 5-10 minutes. You Test to make sure she's high enough for insulin, Feed to make sure she's willing to eat and Shoot.

Yes - I thought it was weird that we're the only people on here shooting different amounts at different times ... that was on the advice of the same vet because of how low she dropped one night ... of course he's the one who told us to withhold food for 12-hour stretches so that might be why she dropped so low also. Thank you!

I’m glad you made your way over here Andrea. I agree with Chris.Test, Feed and shoot in that order.
It really makes me wonder sometimes if vets get any updated training with FD because they sure need it.
Thats good your husband is home and can feed her all day. Don’t Forget the evening cycle as well and feed her during that.
Please let us know how you get on.
We say "my vet" -- I've never even met him and am only reading his initials on the email he sends :( There are three vets in this clinic and I never know which one is going to chime in.

Urghhh I hate that. I had that issue at a few places and I now look for one vet only clinics or a clinic where I’m only dealing with the same vet be it in person, phone or email. The it takes a village doesn’t work when it comes to vets :arghh:
