Hi all. My cat Pepper was just diagnosed with diabetes. Still in the process of working with my vet to develop a medical plan. Pepper’s ultrasound showed that she either has pancreatic cancer or an abscess. I am not sure whether to have the exploratory surgery to determine if it is an abscess. Starting her on antibiotics to attempt to treat her as if she does have an abscess. But vet said that antibiotics only work 50% of the time. I am really struggling to decide whether to put her through a major surgery with a lot of risks (please note- money is not a factor in my decision.). I just don’t want to put her through this if it is indeed cancer and only has a short time with me. Has anyone gone through this and can offer any advice or share your experiences.

Hello and welcome. Did the vet say it would be major surgery? I had a cat (not my diabetic) with a mass on the pancreas and they were able to get a biopsy with a needle, guided by ultrasound. It was not major surgery, needed sedation only.

Hello. Thank you for replying! The sonogram technician said that she would be unable to take a biopsy. I am not sure if it was because of where it was. But I am going to look into getting a second opinion on this since you were able to have it done. Thank you again!!!

She is 14 years young. I adopted her when she was 11 years. She spent 9 years at an animal shelter ( a phenomenal shelter where she had lots of live and attention, wasn’t in a cage, and had lots of kitty friends). I volunteer with the shelter and when I met her I knew I had to adopt her
I had the biopsy taken at a specialty hospital, don't think it was just a technician.
