Hi Erin and welcome!

I don’t know that I agree with your vet about feeding. Dogs do fine with 2 meals a day but cats not so much. What kind of food are you feeding him? We try to stay away from dry food because it’s high on carbs. I personally feed Minnie, who is also on Lantus, small meals several times a day with the bigger meals being around shot time. And the Lantus injections should be 12 hours apart, not at meat time. Is that what you’re doing? I askbecause I had a very bad vet at first that told me I didn’t have to space out the injections every 12 hours and that was completely immaculate. I only found out weeks later. Anyway, there are some tips on doing the injections and if you’re going to home test on that as well. In the meantime, take a look at this link so you can help us help you:

there are a lot of people more experienced than me her and they’ll chime in as well. Hang one and welcome again!! :cat:

Shiloh is 11, he was diagnosed with IBD about a year ago and today was diagnosed as diabetic. My vet recommended he only get 2 meals a day with 1 unit of lantus given with each meal. Shiloh has been free to eat whenever he wants. How long should I leave his food out for him? We got the 1st shot done, not sure if it was right but hoping for the best.

Here are a few more with a lot of great info including how to do the injections with video abs diagram:

Hi Erin my cat was just diagnosed last week so Iam by no means giving advice ,Iam learning also . I was told the Exact same thing by my Vet . 2 meals wet food and 1 unit of Lantus at meal time . My Cat was also free to eat anytime she was eating dry food . I immediately took her dry food away was told by the Vet about Fancy Feast because of low carbohydrate.
Did my research also bought Tiki cat wet food . I’m using the Lantus Pen is that what you are using also ? The people on this forum know so much and are very welcoming Roe

Hills zd food is quite high in carbohydrates. Have you tried any other novel proteins? There are quite a few that are commercially available. Is Shiloh on any other medications for his IBD?

And yes, with Lantus he can graze if that's what he's used to.
We have tried Royal Canin duck, rabbit and venison he didn't like any of them. We had good results with the Royal Canin HP but that has no wet component.

The only med he still has is cerenia and we only use that when we go to the vet. His last dose of prednisone 5mg was Sunday, April 26th. My vet had me stop that last week after he had high blood sugars.

Thank you for the info! We have regular syringes for our lantus.

Good to hear he doesn't need Cerenia daily. It won't impact his blood sugars, but stopping the prednisolone will. Side note, I hope it was prednisolone, not prednisone.

As for food, I was wondering if there was a particular protein that he's eating now, and that he likes. There are many vendors that sell novel proteins, such as Ziwipeak, Natures' Variety, Rawz, Koha. Most of the food you buy from vets is very high in carbs. Just make sure you don't switch foods until you are home testing his blood sugars. Going to low carb food can greatly reduce the dose needed.

I think once the pred clears his system things may change a bit.
