Hi there,

Yesterday: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/04-13-zokni-amps-300-1-281-3-5-176-4-5-134.228261/

Today something unusual happened to Zokni, his AMPS number was really low. PMPS last night was 288 (fed LC wet with a handful of dry and gave 1U), +10=255 (here I fed him a tiny bit of LC wet because he was starving) and then 2 hours later, AMPS=138 (I checked twice to be sure...), I did not shoot, +30 mins=101
Why does this happen?

Here is a breakdown of how I feed George during the day
I'm just quoting one sentence from your comment but I can't tell you how much I appreciate the effort you put into your response. I will check all the foods you mentioned. Zokni clearly dislikes meat (won't touch food with meat) and is all about the fish so I'll have to see which ones come with fish flavors.
Zokni was in a similar situation regarding his weight. At some point he gained a lot and then suddenly lost before being diagnosed. And he's pretty lazy too. Our cats may be soulmates :)
Nice tip on the automatic feeder. It will come in handy once we are allowed to leave the house :)

Are you asking why did he drop from 138 to 101?
Two things could have happened.
He could have dropped because he was hungry and needed some food.
When you get a lower than normal number at preshot, we ask that you stall, don’t feed and test again in 20 mins. We are looking to see if the cat is coming up in numbers. Sometimes the cat can drop back if they need food. This often happens if you stall too long.
He could also have been coming off a bit of a bounce and sometimes when cats do that, the preshot is lower than normal and they can continue to drop a bit more.

Thanks!
Originally I was wondering why he dropped to 138 at AMPS.
2 hours before the AMPS, he was at 255. Sure he was hungry (he only ate half of his dinner, he wouldn't touch the chicken flavored) so I gave him some food, which he ate and still he dropped down to 138. Shouldn't he be rising if he eats.

I saw this before but I don't really understand it. If he is low and asking for food, why not feed?
If he doesn't eat, how would his numbers go up?

Thanks!

When a cat gets to the end of a cycle the insulin is wearing off and the BG numbers will naturally start to go up, unless the cat is coming off a bounce and dropping faster than normal, or the insulin is still working.
If you are happy to shoot the low number you can go ahead and give food and shoot.
But if you are not happy shooting that number, we suggest you stall, don’t feed and see if the numbers come up on their own...that will tell you that the insulin is wearing off and it will be safe to shoot....because you are not shooting the preshot number, you are shooting the number he will be at in a couple of hours at onset. Does that make sense?

Yes! Thanks that's a perfect explanation!

I'm glad I didn't shoot, he's still dropping after 2.5 hours despite having eaten...

With the 77 @ +3 Zokni has earned a reduction in dose down to 0.75 units. (SLGS under 90 earns a reduction in dose.)
So with the next dose give 0.75 units and continue with that for 7 days unless he drops under 90 in which case you would reduce again.

Just one more question, in SLGS, we are mostly interested in the pre-shot numbers, right? So unless something happens (too low, too high), it is unnecessary poking to the cat to check inbetween?
