Hi Everyone!

Hudson is a 10 year old female domestic long hair that I rescued 3 years ago. She weighed 20 pounds when I brought her home. I got her down 14.5 so far and 2 weeks ago she was diagnosed with feline diabetes after I noticed she had been extremely thirsty and peeing a lot.

She is on Lantus insulin 1 unit twice daily. I purchased the kit to test her and that will start next week. I changed her food from Wellness grain free to Tiki Cat grain free.

I am completely new to this. I have never had a pet with diabetes so I look forward to sharing and learning with you all.

Welcome to FDMB.

I suspect you are feeling a bit overwhelmed. It's where all of us started out and there truly is a lot to learn. That's the bad news. The good news it that it all becomes routine pretty quickly.

This is the main forum. Once you get situated here, there is also an insulin support group (ISG) that is specific to using Lantus. In addition to the post that Deb linked, this is the link to the Lantus board. There are sticky notes at the top of the board that will provide a great deal of information about Lantus and its use.

The FDMB community is a group of people who are very generous with their time and their knowledge. Please let us know if you have questions. We're here to help.
 
Hi and welcome to FDMB. So far you are off to a great start. Lantus is a very good insulin and your starting dose is great. I'm also glad to see that you were going to start home testing.

A low-carb can food diet is what we recommend to help get glucose levels under control. Most dry foods are high in carbs. We understand that is not easy to convert a cat that is used to eating dry food over to eating canned food, but it can be done with a lot of patience. Hi!

I have the AlphaTrak2. So far, it is going okay except her BG was high even after giving her insulin for over week so the vet had me increase it by .5 units. So we shall see.

Glad to hear from you again! Hope things are ok with you and yours.

We have a great color coded spreadsheet, for tracking the blood glucose tests. Template you copy, so you don't have to "reinvent the wheel". Directions include setup from a pc, tablet, smartphone.

You can even share it with your vet, via email. It's a nice tool for tracking all sorts of things. When you link it into your User Id Profile "Signature", it lets us see a "view only" version. Only you have the ability to update the SS, in your google account.

Working through this virus outbreak has been tough for so many people.
