Any input on what could be wrong with Smokey

My cat was at the vet last Tuesday - was treated in house for a double ear infection (no oral antibiotics). He was not eating prior to the appointment which was my reason for taking him. He was constantly only licking all the gravy out of the food and letting the food sit. They did a full blood panel and it all came back perfect. We started zofran and mirataz (appy stimulator) on Saturday then (5 days ago) and he started eating great again !!! It was so relieving when he started eating normally again.

I stopped giving zofran on Monday night (3 days ago) to try to start taking him off the meds in Hope's that he would continue to eat . And then tuesday gave the last dose of the appetite stimulant .
Wednesday morning he ate perfectly. Then wednesday night would not eat a thing . So LATE-over night last night I gave both meds to him and now hes eating again...

Has anyone had a similar situation ??
 
Hi Julie, you mentioned the vet did a full blood panel-did they do an fPl test for pancreatitis? It’s not part of a standard lab work-up, and can’t be done in-house, it has to be sent out. Sorry, I don’t remember if you mentioned it specifically in any of your posts before.

They told me when the results came back that it says he does not have pancreatitis but doesnt full rule it out because if it's a mild case it wouldnt show up ? Didnt fully understand what they meant.
 
I’m glad he’s feeling ok otherwise. Sometimes when they act hungry but won’t eat it can be from nausea. Does he sniff the food and lick his lips? That could be a sign of nausea. Sorry I’m not more helpful, hopefully others will come by with more ideas.
 
Julie, they have to do a specific test for pancreatitis. It’s not in with the normal blood work. It’s either a spec fPL which is sent off to the labs and will tell you how bad or not the pancreatitis is ( it gives a number) or a Snap fPL which is done in-house and will say yes/no to pancreatitis but not tell you how bad it is. You will get the results of that test straight away at the vets. The specfPL will not be back until the next day.
What the vets told you is not correct. They must not have done one of the specific tests, because you get an answer with both of those tests. If it’s mild, the specfPL test will reflect that with the number.

Was the ear infection on or in the ear.?
I don’t understand why they didn’t put him on antibiotics. If it was in the ear, he could be in pain. Some ear issues can also cause nausea so I think I would be following up with the vet and asking them to do a specific pancreatitis test .... one of the above I mentioned and to recheck the ears and ask exactly what is wrong with the ears and does he need an antibiotic for them.

At least if those two things were eliminated you would know they were not a problem.

They told me he has a double inner ear infection and one ear had yeast. They did drops in both ears that was supposed to cure the problem .

He has an appointment April 14th for his annual check up and ear recheck . Should I move that up? And if he had pancreatitis would he have other symptoms ?
 
An inner ear infection would not be cured with ear drops. The drops were probably for the yeast. The inner ear in humans can effect balance which in turn can cause nausea. Not sure about cats inner ears but if they are the same as humans, nausea could be coming from there.
An inner ear infection would need antibiotics I would think.
I would not wait until 14 April, I would get it reviewed now if he is not improving/ still has symptoms.
Signs/ symptoms of pancreatitis can include dehydration, lethargy, pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea and not eating. Not every cat has all of them and it depends on the severity of the pancreatitis as to the symptoms.
Shebas main symptoms of a flare of pancreatitis were not eating and being lethargic and mild dehydration.
