Hi all,

Finally feeling up to being back/posting again and getting Arya back on track. I feel so badly I haven't been able to test or post but have been very sick with the flu and sleeping a lot. Still home today but feeling up to testing more. I've been trying to transition her slowly to wet food so last night I gave her a half of a can of wet along with her dry food and a probiotic mixed in the wet food. She happily are it all. Then overnight she had diarrhea and threw up twice. Could it be the brand or flavor or does she just have a very sensitive stomach? Should I try a different flavor? Should I only give her a quarter of a can instead of half? What I gave her was soulistic turkey and chicken pate. My other cat ate some and did not get sick. Also assuming I can get mid cycle numbers today - should I increase her insulin? The vet told me to do 4 units. Thanks everyone for any help!

I am glad you are feeling better now Katie.
I would try and get some mid cycle tests in this cycle before you increase the dose as we don’t know how low this dose is taking Arya.
When you do increase I would go up to 3.75 not 4 units as the vet suggested, especially as you haven’t been able to get any mid cycle tests in while you have been ill.
It sounds as if something didn’t agree with her if she vomited and had diarrhoea. Maybe try a different flavour/ brand and a smaller amount of the canned and see if that makes a difference.

Have you managed to get any ketone tests in over the last few days?

Hi thank you! I will try another flavor I bought and I'll only give her a quarter (with the probiotic mixed in) and I'll see how she does on that. I have not gotten a ketones test in but I will try today along with getting more BG tests in.

I know it’s been hard for you when you’ve been so sick. You’ve done well managing to do what you did.
If you can get the ketone test and BGs during the cycle that would be great!

Seems like Arya is having a sympathy sickness with her mama. I hope you BOTH feel better fast!

BTW... I know most people test for ketones using the urine strips... but I have found it to be 1000x easier using a blood ketone meter. I set up both my meters, and test for ketones on the same drop of blood that I test for glucose on. Just a thought!

Thanks all :) I have thought about getting a meter that does ketones plus BG but I haven't done it yet - I don't think I could have two separate she kind of squirms now so I'm lucky to even get the one meter to work/drop of blood. Looks like today she is pretty high/going up instead of down :( she is eating a lot of the dry food throughout the day still

Good to see you back and on the mend Katie. :bighug::bighug: Seems there's a nasty couple virus's out there now.

Food transitions should be slow. Some cats react negatively to faster changes. It'll be easier to keep on top of any BG changes that result if you transitions slowly too.

So should I try a quarter of a can do you think? Im also going to try just plain chicken pate and will add the probiotic to it. Yesterday she only got a half a can but that made her sick (it was chicken and turkey though).

Chicken is a more common allergy than turkey, but a tsp or two should be a good start. Not sure how big your cans are.
