Good Morning guys! Thank you to everyone who has helped me over the past week with Smokey and his decision not to eat :cat:( we still dont know why - only think I can think of is his ear infection) . We have been using zofran and an appetite stimulant ( just did 2nd dose of each ) and he seems like hes back to normal !
He ate 4 oz for breakfast and has been snacking through out the night .

When should I stop using the meds ?

When should I stop using the meds ?

I don't think there's a maximum time to give either of these meds, but I am not sure of that (hopefully others will step in with more specific info). In general, when dealing with nausea, the answer is that usually you are giving these meds for longer than you think you need them, because stopping them too soon will bring back all the problems.

If the vet did not give you a time frame, I would say several days at a minimum, then you could maybe start experimenting with cutting them back and seeing how he does.

So glad he's eating again!!!!!! You must be so relieved!

I am SO relieved. It was a rough week

Hi Julie!
I’m so glad Smokey seems better and is eating for you. Such a relief.
And look at his numbers!
If you get another number like you did at +5 last night (98) I would always do another test to check the number is rising not falling.

When are your shot times? They seem to be very late morning and late night.
Do you do them then because it suits you or have they just happened because of stalling etc?
I would have thought with two little kids you would be up early in the day and a shot time of 7:7 or 8:8 would make it easier for you. Then you would be able to get in a +5 at night that wasn’t such a very late time... like 3 or 5 am! .

I want to change to 8:8 really bad ... it worked out that way from stalling due to him not eating for a week

The two ways you can go back to 8:8 is to either skip a dose and then start back at 8:8. Not an ideal way especially as he showed trace ketones in his urine at the vet the other day. So probably not that way.
OR you could go back 15 minutes each cycle or 30 minutes once a day until you got to 8:8.
So if you are doing 11:11 now, tonight go back to 10.45 pm then in the morning go back to 10.30am then tomorrow night go back to 10.15 pm etc til you reach 8:8.
OR go back 30 minutes EITHER each morning OR each night. Does that all make sense?

Keep checking for ketones today.
He looks like he will be above 100 tonight by the look of the +7 test but he may give you another opportunity to skip soon.
It depends on the BG and if there are any ketones around as to whether skipping is an option.

Ok its +11 and he is 155 and Ketones are .2 (which I think means negative on the blood meter )
Also he only ate about 2 ounces tonight

Do you think I could skip this dose and start doing the 8am dosing ? That would be 9 hours from now .

I'm sorry I was not on earlier when you posted about skipping.
I would not have skipped the dose with the preshot 178, but looking at the SS it looks as if you have decided to.
I'm glad you tested for ketones and they were negative. Test again in the morning.
Make sure Smokey eats well overnight even though he hasn't had any insulin and drinks well.
His BG may be running higher tomorrow morning with the skipped shot.
I'm glad it's only 8 hours away not 12.
It will be much better for you to get back to better shot times though..
