@Wendy&Neko and I were discussing a dose increase for today - I joked that last time we threatened a dose increase, Zhoom had a trip to the lagoon - and well, here we are again! This time with a dose reduction I think? Anyone around to help me through this? I have never dealt with a hypo before. He seems ok - not acting weird as far as I can see. I just fed him some 15% food. Could use some support. It feels quite scary!

Sorry I overlooked that you bumped him with 15%. I'll be here to help/support. Others may come in to help as well:bighug:

ETA: BTW nice catch. You're awesome!

this is probably a good time for you to figure out how zhoom boy responds to carbs. you could try MC and test again since he is over 50 now.
don't want to go overboard with the carbs either.

disclaimer - i'm a newbie too. you would know best what works for zhoom boy in terms of carb sensitivity.

I agree-- he's earned a reduction, nothing left to prove. Just another little snack (tsp or two) is fine-- we want to nudge him up and encourage him to surf a little, not send him on a rocketship.

So, with the little increases from food, would this indicate that Zhoom is carb sensitive or not so much? I also just double checked the food chart and realized that I gave him HC snacks just now - I thought the food was 15% but it is 17% carbs

Reposting this question - not sure why it went into the quote box above...

I'd say not so much, actually. He hasn't moved much from where he was (though these are lovely numbers right now!), even with that 17% carb snack. Part of that might be due to now moving into the heart of the insulin action, too-- he might respond differently at a different part of the cycle.

The main thing is to keep good notes on days like today, for next time.

Great job today Charity! Congrats on the reduction and good instincts handling the low numbers. :D And I promise, next time will be easier. You've done a good job on the SS documenting what you gave when. That will help in the future.

How was Zhoomie doing during the low numbers? We don't normally call it a hypo unless cats are exhibiting actual hypo symptoms.

I'd also like to comment on some of what was said today. This is in the Sticky Note on Handling Low Numbers. First, HC was given first, and was absolutely the right thing to do, unless you know your kitty's response to carbs, and know that less could work. First of all, it's says use HC in the Sticky Note. ;) Two reasons here. First, when a caregiver is new to low numbers, you want to be cautious and start with the big guns first cause we don't know how carb sensitive the cat is yet. The idea between HC is that you want to get a decent bump in numbers, as the numbers could come down when the carbs wears off. Second, the low numbers occurred early on in the cycle. This was well before nadir, the insulin is stronger and still working to take the numbers down. Later in the cycle is when you can start playing with less carbs.

Carbs take 20-30 minutes to go from the plate to the blood stream. ECID - learn what works for your cat.

And just a PSA - new folks, if you haven't already, print off the Sticky Note on handling low numbers. Invariably there will be a time when the power is out or internet is down and your cat will go low. They just know the worst timing. :cat:

Thanks :)

I don't think that I would say Zhoom was "Hypo" - he did get a little grumpy - meaning he swatted at me, which is not characteristic behavior for Zhoom. That was the only "Hypo" sign that I was seeing. He got a little grumpy before too (bit me lightly) when he went down to 56 on February 25th. I think a little grumpy can be a sign to me in the future that he may have lower blood sugar.
