Hello! My cat has been doing pretty well on the Lantus since diagnosed . However over the past 2 weeks he has become SOO picky with food.. I've tried everything from pate (normal food), gravy bits, dry food ... just to get him to eat . No matter what I give him he will just eat a little bit and then I'm constantly worrying because of the insulin. Sometimes he will have a good appetite and eat it all and then others he wont. He is still constantly begging for people food though.

Has any one went through this ? I've been trying to stay patient with it and not get worried but its starting to worry me

Hello Julie! First, you might want to change the "GA" on your post to the "?". The GA stands for "gone ahead," meaning a kitty has passed away.

Is Smokey having any other issues? Does he beg for people food even when he won't touch his cat food? Have you tried a different brand? My cat is very picky when it comes to the Friskies flavors, but gobbles up the Fancy Feast pates, for example. I'd be cautious about the gravy ones and the dry food. I know you want to get him to eat, but higher carb content won't help him in the long run. I would try him on a different brand of wet food, and try mixing up the flavors a lot, in case he's getting bored. You can also try warming the food very slightly in the microwave. Fishy flavors are also a crowd pleaser, though feeding them every day can cause other issues because of higher phosphorus and mercury.

Smokey has been on one unit a very long time. Have you considered testing daily, getting a curve once a week (testing every 2 hours for a 12 hour period) and adjusting the dose so he has a better chance at remission? Adjusting the dose at the right time can make all the difference.

Hi Julie
I can’t see any BG recordings since August 2019 and even then it looks as if you were not testing daily. I would strongly recommend you test before every shot and also test during the cycles to see how low the insulin is taking Smokey.

What dose is he on now?

If he is not eating well it might be worth while having a vet visit to see if something else is happening.
Do you think he is nauseated? Does he sniff the food and walk away?’

Not an expert here but I remember testing at least once a week with my remission kitty Trouble. Its good to keep tabs on their remission.

Thanks for the responses guys ...

I use to test pre shot every time up until about December and then stopped just because we never had any kind of problems . The last few days I have been testing pre shot and his numbers seem decent . My last curve I did was about a month ago and numbers seemed good . I'm going to test today at 6+ to see what hes dropping to.

I have not been noticing any other symptoms. And he will eat if I fight him on it but he has never been this picky or stubborn when it came to food until very recently.

He does go to the vet in a month for his annual check up so if things start to worry more I will just move that up . I was just curious if anyone has gone through this or has advice for extremely picky eaters .

Also very weird ... when I tried dry food this weekend just to get him to eat he would immediately puke up the hard food (undigested at all) . So I'm thinking that was just too rough on his belly. Other than that there hasnt been any puking besides the occasional hairball :cat:

These Transitioning Tips for Dry Food Addicts also work on a cat stubborn about eating.

His tummy probably isn't used to the dry food anymore.

Are you testing for ketones? Daily?
Not enough food + not enough insulin + infection/inflammation (bad teeth, UTI, IBD etc) leads to ketones.
Ketones lead to DKA. (diabetic acidosis) Life threatening.

Please test.
